Job Summary

This position is part of a team responsible for managing assets of the Long Island transmission and distribution systems from 13kV through 345kV and overall coordination and compliance of elements on the bulk electric system with applicable reliability standards. This position offers problem solving and challenging leadership opportunities on various distribution system planning initiatives and represents distribution engineering in various key internal and external stakeholder committees. This position also functions as a technical advisor/mentor for the new engineers on the team and fills in for the Engineering Manager as needed. Additionally this position represents PSEG LI/LIPA on technical stakeholder committees and regulatory matters and takes strategic technical decisions on various initiatives. This distribution engineering position pioneers the future by leading the reliable integration of cutting edge technologies into the system. 

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop asset life cycle plans and create/update required Asset Management Plans (AM P's) for major underground distribution cable systems assets. Assess asset class performance and its impact on the system, while evaluating economic and operational risks.
  • Responsible for the annual development, analysis, and prioritization of project lists of underground distribution cables and equipment replacements for the Asset Strategy sponsored programs. Lead the effort with the Distribution Operations Divisions to identify areas with recurring primary and/or secondary cable failures. Perform analytical evaluation of cable asset classes, cable fault history data, and cable test data to insure most cost effective capital spend and the efficient allocation of resources.
  • Responsible for developing and supporting the highest degree of system reliability by assessing the performance of outside plant assets, in particular underground distribution primary and secondary cable systems, and implementing material and technology improvements.
  • Evaluate emergent cable/splice failures, performing root cause analyses of subject failures, issuing findings/conclusions reports, and developing repair/replace recommendations for all such failures. Review and validate that all criteria are met for any emergent cable failures that are designated to be capital cable replacements.
  • Provide engineering assistance to construction and operations groups in the application of present standards and the introduction of innovating technologies. Conduct site visits and provide field support to construction and operating crews. Perform construction audits of underground cable and equipment replacement projects.  Support Asset Strategy related overhead distribution initiatives and capital programs, as necessary.
  • Responsible for creating/reviewing/updating construction standards, purchase and test specifications, and procedures for underground distribution cables and related materials and equipment for the underground electric system, including the setting of criteria for acceptance testing, installation, maintenance, and operation.
  • Perform studies related to evaluation and performance of economic and quality related material/equipment issues.  Control the review and revision of existing technical documentation related to Company needs, state of the art materials, requirements of industry standards, and compliance with all codes (such as NESC, NEC, IEEE ANSI, NEMA, etc.).
Job Specific Qualifications
  • BS Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • 8 years prior experience with T&D Systems and/or T&D Engineering
  • Knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems and equipment 
  • Knowledge of engineering, design, and analysis of electric distribution systems 
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC) and other related guidelines to electric distribution system engineering, design and operation
  • Familiarity with Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines 
  • Have excellent problem solving skills, and the ability to motivate all parties to focus on safety and maximize reliability
  • Be a proactive problem solver with high energy level and possess ability to quickly remedy problems as they arise 
  • Ability to lead and motivate team members and the ability to effectively collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to set direction for the organization in regards to technical issues and the attention to detail
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills 
  • Possess a valid US driver's license with a safe and satisfactory driving history.
  • Ability to respond to emergency storm and other conditions that may require field work during nights and weekends
  • Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required

Desired

  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, MBA or PE License preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience in Transmission or Distribution Engineering preferred
  • Experience in field supervision of Electric T&D System construction and/or maintenance preferred
