What is a Power BI designer?

Power BI Designers are professionals who specialize in creating, developing, and managing interactive reports and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI. They transform raw data into meaningful insights by designing visualizations that help organizations make data-driven decisions. Power BI Designers work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements, connect to various data sources, and ensure the accuracy and usability of the reports they create. Their expertise lies in data modeling, visualization best practices, and optimizing report performance.

What are some common challenges Power BI designers face when developing dashboards for diverse stakeholders?

Power BI Designers often encounter challenges when balancing the varied requirements of multiple stakeholders, such as ensuring visualizations are both insightful and easy to understand for users with different data literacy levels. Additionally, integrating data from disparate sources and maintaining data quality can be complex, especially in large organizations. Effective communication with business users and IT teams is essential to clarify objectives, address feedback, and deliver actionable reports that drive decision-making.

The Air Force, Space & Intel Business Group (AFSI) of SAIC is seeking a Power Bi Developer to support a transformational infrastructure program for DCSA.

SAIC is proud to be supporting DCSA in safeguarding our nation’s information. DCSA is the designated oversight authority on the accreditation of classified facilities, information systems, and the insider threat program. This involves security oversight of more than 10,000 companies and approximately 13,000 facilities involved in classified work throughout the DoD and 31 Federal agencies.

Specifically, on the DCSA One IT program, SAIC will provide an enterprise IT solution that delivers highly secure and adaptable IT infrastructure, provides customer support, and cutting-edge technologies that support operations and advance the DCSA mission under a single IT environment (i.e., One IT).

Job Description

The Power BI Developer will work with our team of IT professionals to build data-driven solutions using Power BI, Power Platform, SharePoint, and O365 for Government clients, with a strong focus on reporting and analytics from ServiceNow and other enterprise systems. The developer will work with business and technical stakeholders to define constraints, develop and document requirements, and identify, build, and deploy best-fit technical solutions.

Responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Power BI dashboards, reports, and data models that consume data from ServiceNow, SharePoint, and other O365/enterprise data sources.

Responsible for customization of DoD365 to meet business requirements. Requires:

  • Expertise with SharePoint Online site administration and page/list/library creation.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience building Power Apps and Power Automate Flows.

  • Understand ServiceNow tables (e.g., Incident, Problem, Change, Request, CMDB) and data structures to build meaningful analytics.
  • Work with ServiceNow administrators/developers to define and optimize data feeds, views, and integration patterns.

Manage the full lifecycle (from requirements gathering, to design, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and user support) of business solutions for government clients across Power BI, Power Platform, SharePoint, and O365.

Qualifications

It is required that the Power BI Developer have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five (5) or more years of experience. Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to architect technical data and reporting solutions, including detailed written/visual documentation, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise using Power BI to build dashboards and data analytics, including:
    • Connecting to multiple data sources (especially ServiceNow and SharePoint).
    • Designing data models and relationships.
    • Creating measures and calculations using DAX.
    • Developing visually effective, user-friendly dashboards and reports.
  • Experience working with ServiceNow data and platform, including:
    • Understanding of core modules (e.g., Incident, Problem, Change, Request, CMDB) and their data structures.
    • Experience extracting, transforming, and loading ServiceNow data into Power BI or other reporting tools.
    • Experience collaborating with ServiceNow admins/developers on integrations and data quality.
  • Demonstrated expertise building dynamic and complex Power Apps and Power Automate Flows, including:
  • Experience with agile and iterative software development methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to interact with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and clearly document requirements and solutions.
  • Ethical and hard-working; able to perform with minimal supervision and operate effectively in a government/DoD environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft Power BI / Power Platform certifications; ServiceNow platform experience or certifications are a plus but not required.
