Job description

Power BI Consultant

Client is seeking a highly experienced Power BI Consultant for a 6-month contract with the possibility of extension for up to two years. This consultant will be instrumental in optimizing reporting processes, managing data flows, and utilizing Power BI to address complex business challenges. The ideal candidate will be in the second phase of their Power BI career, with more than 5 years of experience, ready to handle advanced problem-solving, strategic system optimizations, and have an architecture mindset to effectively "crack the code" when it comes to complex reporting and data flow solutions.

This position offers flexibility with an on-site preference in Duncan, SC or Auburn Hills, MI, but we are open to 100% remote candidates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Power BI Expertise:
    • Design, develop, and optimize Power BI reports and dashboards for complex business needs.
    • Utilize Power Query and Power Apps to enhance reporting capabilities and automate processes.
    • Develop advanced DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) queries to solve analytical challenges and improve data performance.
    • Manage and optimize data connections, data flows, and SQL queries to ensure effective reporting.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to data query folding to ensure smooth report generation.
  • System Optimization & Problem Solving:
    • Ensure Power BI reports integrate effectively with microservices and manage role-based security.
    • Collaborate with teams to optimize data structures, making them more efficient for reporting.
    • Identify opportunities to improve tools and technologies, ensuring the systems remain cutting-edge and efficient.
    • Possess an architecture mindset to find solutions that “crack the code” of reporting challenges, utilizing the best available tools and ensuring efficiency.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Present and communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Participate in weekly status meetings to update stakeholders and discuss project progress.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Skills:
    • Power BI Expertise (5+ years): Extensive experience with Power BI, having moved beyond basic reporting to advanced analytics and problem-solving.
    • Advanced proficiency in DAX required, with desired skills in Python, M-language, R, SQL, and Deneb for analysis.
    • Expert in Power Query development, focusing on data cleaning, reduction, query folding optimization and efficient data model creation.
    • Experience with SDLC, Azure DevOps, Agile/Waterfall methodologies, and version control systems (Git, GitHub, Bitbucket).
    • Create and manage Power BI App Workspaces with multi-reporting capabilities and customized audience views.
    • Implement Dynamic Row Level Security for embedded Power BI reports to ensure proper data access control.
    • Design semantic models enabling consistent data interpretation and analysis across multiple business units.
    • Integrate data from Azure, Snowflake, SQL, APIs, SharePoint, and Microsoft sources to create comprehensive reporting solutions.
    • Configure and maintain automated dashboard refresh schedules across different frequencies (daily, weekly, monthly). Implement Incremental Refresh strategies to optimize large dataset performance and reduce refresh times.
    • Master star schema relationship designs and semantic models with latest Microsoft Power BI features to enhance data model functionality.
    • Ability to creating effective visualizations and analytical reports.
    • Connect APIs and OData feeds to build historical trend analysis in Power BI.
    • Develop integrated solutions using PowerApps and Power BI for interactive dashboard experiences.
    • Architecture Mindset & Problem Solving: A focus on finding solutions and cracking the code for complex data structures and reporting systems.
    • Communication & Problem-Solving: Exceptional ability to communicate complex concepts and proactively solve business challenges. Comfortable working independently and making decisions that affect overall systems.
  • Qualifications:
    • 5+ years of designing Power BI solutions including all facets (dataflows, power query, data cleaning, data modeling, report / dashboard / app publishing (required)
    • Experience with reporting servers, data integrations, and role-based security in Power BI. (required)
    • Strong understanding of Power BI architecture and ability to manage large datasets. (required)
