Job description

Coating Operator


The Coating Operator is responsible for preparing coating solutions and setting up, operating, monitoring, and cleaning tablet coating equipment within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This hands-on role ensures coated tablets meet established quality specifications while supporting safe operations, production efficiency, and compliance with cGMP requirements.

The ideal candidate has direct experience operating pharmaceutical tablet coating equipment, monitoring coating process parameters, troubleshooting coating defects, and completing accurate manufacturing documentation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate tablet coating equipment in accordance with approved batch records, SOPs, and production requirements.
  • Prepare coating solutions or suspensions according to approved instructions, ensuring accurate material quantities, mixing, and required preparation records.
  • Inspect and assemble spray guns, nozzles, tubing, pumps, and related components, verifying proper setup and functionality before operation.
  • Monitor and adjust approved coating parameters, including spray rate, atomization air pressure, pan speed, airflow, and inlet, exhaust, and product temperatures.
  • Perform and document required in-process checks, including coating weight gain, tablet appearance, color uniformity, and other specified quality attributes.
  • Identify and troubleshoot common coating defects and equipment issues, escalating unresolved problems or out-of-specification results to supervision and Quality as required.
  • Complete batch records, equipment logs, material reconciliations, and other required documentation accurately and contemporaneously.
  • Perform equipment cleaning, disassembly, reassembly, and product changeovers according to approved procedures.


What We’re Looking For


Experience

  • 2+ years of hands-on tablet coating experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing required.
  • Demonstrated experience setting up, operating, cleaning, and troubleshooting pharmaceutical tablet coating equipment.
  • Experience preparing coating solutions or suspensions, monitoring process parameters, and performing in-process checks.
  • Experience completing batch records and equipment documentation in a cGMP environment.


Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.


Skills & Knowledge

  • Practical knowledge of tablet coating operations, spray systems, solution preparation, and equipment adjustments.
  • Understanding of how spray rate, temperature, airflow, atomization, and pan speed affect coating quality and drying.
  • Ability to recognize and troubleshoot common coating defects, such as sticking, picking, twinning, uneven color, roughness, and logo bridging.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP, batch record documentation, equipment cleaning, and contamination prevention.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and ability to follow written procedures and communicate production issues.
