How much do powder atomization jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for powder atomization in the United States is $18.61, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $20.19 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is powder atomization and what does a powder atomization technician do?

Powder atomization is a manufacturing process used to produce fine metal powders by breaking up molten metal into small droplets, which then solidify into particles. A powder atomization technician operates and monitors equipment that performs this process, ensuring the resulting powders meet quality and safety standards. They may also be responsible for adjusting process parameters, collecting samples for analysis, and maintaining the atomization machinery. This role is essential in industries such as additive manufacturing, metallurgy, and electronics, where high-quality metal powders are required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Powder Atomization Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Powder Atomization Technician, you need a solid understanding of metallurgy, materials science, and safety protocols, typically supported by technical training or a related degree. Experience with atomization equipment, process control systems, and knowledge of quality assurance standards like ISO 9001 are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the safe, consistent, and high-quality production of metal powders used in various manufacturing applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in powder atomization, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in powder atomization often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent particle size distribution, preventing contamination, and optimizing production efficiency. Addressing these issues typically involves closely monitoring process parameters, performing regular equipment maintenance, and adhering to strict quality control protocols. Collaborating with quality assurance teams and process engineers is essential to troubleshoot problems and implement improvements. Continuous training and staying updated with technological advancements also help mitigate operational challenges and ensure high-quality powder production.

What is the difference between Powder Atomization vs Powder Metallurgist?

AspectPowder AtomizationPowder Metallurgist
Primary FocusProducing metal powders through atomization processesDeveloping, processing, and analyzing metal powders and alloys
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, metal powder production facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing, quality control settings
CredentialsTechnical certifications, engineering or materials science backgroundMaterials science, metallurgy degrees, certifications in metallurgy

Powder Atomization specialists focus on producing high-quality metal powders via atomization techniques, while Powder Metallurgists work on developing and optimizing powders for various applications. Both roles require technical knowledge of metallurgy, but their core responsibilities differ in production versus application and analysis.
