What is a PostgreSQL database engineer?

A PostgreSQL Database Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing databases using the PostgreSQL relational database management system. Their responsibilities include database schema design, performance tuning, security management, data backup and recovery, and ensuring high availability. They work closely with developers and system administrators to support application requirements and maintain data integrity. PostgreSQL Database Engineers play a critical role in organizations that rely on robust data storage and management solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by PostgreSQL database engineers when optimizing database performance?

PostgreSQL Database Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing query performance bottlenecks, optimizing indexing strategies, and balancing workloads across multiple databases. Large datasets and complex queries can sometimes result in slow response times, requiring engineers to analyze query plans and adjust configurations accordingly. Additionally, ensuring data consistency and high availability in distributed environments can be demanding, especially when working with replication and backup strategies. Collaboration with developers and system administrators is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain optimal database performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PostgreSQL database engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, you need strong expertise in SQL, database design, performance tuning, and a solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like pgAdmin, backup and replication utilities, and relevant certifications such as the EDB PostgreSQL Associate are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in managing data integrity and collaborating with development teams. These competencies are essential to ensure reliable, optimized, and secure database environments that support critical business operations.

What is the difference between Postgresql Database Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectPostgresql Database EngineerDatabase Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing PostgreSQL databasesMaintaining, securing, and ensuring the performance of databases
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PostgreSQL expertise, scripting, performance tuningDatabase management, backup/recovery, security protocols
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, data engineering projectsIT operations, support teams, enterprise environments

While both roles involve working with databases, a PostgreSQL Database Engineer primarily focuses on designing and optimizing PostgreSQL databases, whereas a Database Administrator handles ongoing maintenance, security, and performance management. The roles often overlap but serve different stages of the database lifecycle.

Job description

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves, and build a better world-together. At Ford, we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

Do you believe technology can help technicians diagnose and repair vehicles more efficiently? We do! Delivering exceptional vehicle service experiences requires reliable, scalable, and secure digital platforms that provide technicians with the right data, files, and diagnostic capabilities when they need them. That's where the Ford Diagnostic Service Platform (FDSP) makes an impact.

FDSP is a collection of cloud-based Java microservices and data repositories that interfaces with client tools used by vehicle service technicians. The platform includes more than 30 microservices, 450 APIs, 14 PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases, and more than 80 TB of file storage. FDSP connects with internal and external systems to provide the information and files technicians need to diagnose and repair Ford vehicles.

We are seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer to join the FDSP software delivery team. In this role, you will design, develop, enhance, deploy, and support cloud-native microservices that advance Ford's vehicle diagnostics capabilities. You should have a strong technical background and demonstrate experience in Java, Spring Boot, REST services, Google Cloud Platform, DevOps, and Agile software delivery.

Responsibilities include the end-to-end development and support of microservice-based application software, from feature design and backlog refinement through testing, deployment, production monitoring, and continuous improvement. Working closely with business partners, product teams, and cross-functional engineers, you will deliver high-quality, resilient, and scalable solutions that support business-critical vehicle service operations.

We recognize that no one person will embody every single quality or skill listed below. If you are passionate about software engineering and have a strong foundation in cloud-native development, microservices, and DevOps, we encourage you to apply.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered

Experience:

  • 6+ years of professional software-development experience
  • Experience developing and supporting enterprise applications using Agile development methodologies
  • Experience collaborating with business partners, product teams, engineers, and technical stakeholders to deliver software solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage changing priorities, work independently, and contribute effectively within a collaborative delivery team
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills

Required Technical Experience:

  • Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful services
  • Experience building cloud microservices and cloud-native applications on Google Cloud Platform, including Cloud Run
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Firestore, MongoDB, or comparable relational and NoSQL database technologies
  • Experience with Agile delivery methods, including feature development, user stories, backlog refinement, iterative development, and sprint execution
  • Experience with source control and automated CI/CD release processes using GitHub workflows, Tekton, Jenkins, Gradle, or similar tools
  • Experience using code-quality, dependency-management, and security tools, including SonarQube, Fossa, or similar technologies
  • Experience with application monitoring, performance analysis, and production incident response using Dynatrace, Splunk, or comparable observability platforms
  • Strong commitment to quality engineering practices, including automated testing and test-driven development
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex application, integration, and performance issues

Preferred Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience with PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Firestore, and/or MongoDB
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure
  • Experience developing front-end applications using Angular, React, or similar frameworks
  • Experience with Kafka or other event-streaming and messaging technologies
  • Experience supporting large-scale, business-critical cloud platforms
  • Familiarity with vehicle diagnostics, service applications, automotive systems, or technician-facing tools
  • Experience implementing secure, scalable, and highly available microservice architectures

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:

  • Immediate medical, dental, and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care, parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established and active employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service
  • A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
  • Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
