What is a PostgreSQL Database Engineer?

A PostgreSQL Database Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing databases using the PostgreSQL relational database management system. Their responsibilities include database schema design, performance tuning, security management, data backup and recovery, and ensuring high availability. They work closely with developers and system administrators to support application requirements and maintain data integrity. PostgreSQL Database Engineers play a critical role in organizations that rely on robust data storage and management solutions.

What is the difference between Postgresql Database Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectPostgresql Database EngineerDatabase Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing PostgreSQL databasesMaintaining, securing, and ensuring the performance of databases
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PostgreSQL expertise, scripting, performance tuningDatabase management, backup/recovery, security protocols
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, data engineering projectsIT operations, support teams, enterprise environments

While both roles involve working with databases, a PostgreSQL Database Engineer primarily focuses on designing and optimizing PostgreSQL databases, whereas a Database Administrator handles ongoing maintenance, security, and performance management. The roles often overlap but serve different stages of the database lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, you need strong expertise in SQL, database design, performance tuning, and a solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like pgAdmin, backup and replication utilities, and relevant certifications such as the EDB PostgreSQL Associate are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in managing data integrity and collaborating with development teams. These competencies are essential to ensure reliable, optimized, and secure database environments that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by PostgreSQL Database Engineers when optimizing database performance?

PostgreSQL Database Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing query performance bottlenecks, optimizing indexing strategies, and balancing workloads across multiple databases. Large datasets and complex queries can sometimes result in slow response times, requiring engineers to analyze query plans and adjust configurations accordingly. Additionally, ensuring data consistency and high availability in distributed environments can be demanding, especially when working with replication and backup strategies. Collaboration with developers and system administrators is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain optimal database performance.

EDB empowers enterprises to control risk, manage costs and scale efficiently for a data and AI led world. Serving more than 1,500 customers globally and as the leading contributor to the vibrant and fast-growing PostgreSQL community, EDB supports major government organizations, financial services, media and information technology companies. EDB’s data-driven solutions enable customers to modernize legacy systems and break data silos while leveraging enterprise-grade open source technologies. With EDB Postgres AI, we bring reliability and scale to Postgres for the modern era, giving organizations the database infrastructure to run their most demanding workloads with confidence, at any scale, anywhere. The Senior Product Marketing Manager, Database will own the global messaging, positioning, and go-to-market strategy for EDB Postgres AI's core database platform capabilities. You will be the strategic voice for why enterprises choose EDB Postgres AI over the alternatives, and why they stay.

You’ll become EDB's go-to expert on the database buyer journey, translating complex infrastructure capabilities into clear, differentiated messaging and high-impact GTM programs. This role requires both strategic depth and executional range to work across product, sales, and marketing to move the market and drive measurable adoption.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who is passionate about helping customers do more with their data and can turn complex technical concepts into clear, compelling narratives and go-to-market programs.

Your impact
  • Ownership: Drive measurable adoption of EDB Postgres AI’s core database capabilities — resilience, scale, security, and AI-native Postgres — and own the narrative of our category-defining capabilities like autonomous operations and semantic intelligence. This is your north star.

  • Market‑Leading Positioning: Own the narrative that makes EDB Postgres AI the default platform for enterprises bringing AI to their data and running mission‑critical workloads, measured by competitive win rates, analyst recognition, and share of voice in the database market.

  • Strategic GTM Execution: Drive end‑to‑end GTM strategy for database platform launches and updates, including messaging, adoption programs, and cross‑functional execution.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as the internal and external authority on database personas — DBAs, architects, platform engineers, and infrastructure buyers — their journeys, pain points, and the business case for modern databases. You’ll be the steward of sharp, competitive messaging and insights to win against commercial databases and cloud‑native alternatives.

What you will bring
  • 6+ years of experience in product marketing or a related role in an enterprise technology organization, preferably with a focus on database, infrastructure, or platform products.

  • Proven track record of developing messaging and executing GTM strategies with measurable business impact.

  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling narratives for both technical audiences (DBAs, architects) and business decision‑makers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross‑functionally across product, sales, and marketing to deliver results.

  • Excellent storytelling and communication skills.

What will give you an edge
  • Fluency in the emerging agentic database landscape (in‑database AI, semantic layers, autonomous operations) or deep knowledge of commercial, cloud, and emerging database technologies.

  • Hands‑on familiarity with PostgreSQL or experience marketing database or infrastructure products.

  • Track record of building programs from zero to one in competitive, technical markets.

  • Comfort working cross‑functionally with global stakeholders across product, sales, and field teams.
