What is a PostgreSQL Database Engineer?

A PostgreSQL Database Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing databases using the PostgreSQL relational database management system. Their responsibilities include database schema design, performance tuning, security management, data backup and recovery, and ensuring high availability. They work closely with developers and system administrators to support application requirements and maintain data integrity. PostgreSQL Database Engineers play a critical role in organizations that rely on robust data storage and management solutions.

What is the difference between Postgresql Database Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectPostgresql Database EngineerDatabase Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing PostgreSQL databasesMaintaining, securing, and ensuring the performance of databases
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PostgreSQL expertise, scripting, performance tuningDatabase management, backup/recovery, security protocols
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, data engineering projectsIT operations, support teams, enterprise environments

While both roles involve working with databases, a PostgreSQL Database Engineer primarily focuses on designing and optimizing PostgreSQL databases, whereas a Database Administrator handles ongoing maintenance, security, and performance management. The roles often overlap but serve different stages of the database lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, you need strong expertise in SQL, database design, performance tuning, and a solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like pgAdmin, backup and replication utilities, and relevant certifications such as the EDB PostgreSQL Associate are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in managing data integrity and collaborating with development teams. These competencies are essential to ensure reliable, optimized, and secure database environments that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by PostgreSQL Database Engineers when optimizing database performance?

PostgreSQL Database Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing query performance bottlenecks, optimizing indexing strategies, and balancing workloads across multiple databases. Large datasets and complex queries can sometimes result in slow response times, requiring engineers to analyze query plans and adjust configurations accordingly. Additionally, ensuring data consistency and high availability in distributed environments can be demanding, especially when working with replication and backup strategies. Collaboration with developers and system administrators is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain optimal database performance.

Job description

Company Overview:

About Us:
Atlanta-based Incident IQ is the leading workflow management platform built exclusively for K-12 districts. Trusted by over 2,000 districts, Incident IQ powers mission-critical services for more than 12 million students and educators nationwide. By connecting technology and operational workflows, Incident IQ enables schools to streamline processes, reduce administrative burdens, and focus on what matters most: supporting students.

Purpose:
Incident IQ is committed to creating a future where every K-12 district operates with seamless efficiency. When operations are unified on a single platform, districts gain the clarity and control needed to build a stronger foundation for student success. We're focused on delivering the tools, support, and partnerships that help make that vision a reality.

Mission:
Incident IQ is on a mission to eliminate the friction of disconnected systems and clunky workflows that slow schools down. We're reimagining the critical work that happens behind the scenes, bringing visibility, efficiency, and impact to the processes that keep classrooms running. By streamlining the complex, automating the routine, and surfacing the insights that matter most, we can create the conditions for educators to teach, students to thrive, and districts to shape the future of education.

Senior Data Engineer Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and population of our new BI data warehouse. This role is highly cross-functional and critical to Incident IQ's next phase of growth. You will be responsible for aggregating complex data streams from our core SaaS platform (SQL, MongoDB) and third-party systems (Salesforce, Gainsight, etc.) into a centralized data warehouse/lake.

In this role, you will empower the entire company by unlocking internal reports and actionable insights. Furthermore, you will play a pivotal role in productizing this data by collaborating with product teams to build a scalable, customer-facing analytics version embedded within our platform.

Senior Data Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Data Warehouse Architecture: Design, implement, and scale a modern BI data warehouse/data lake from the ground up, tailored to support both internal business analytics and external customer-facing reporting.
  • Data Pipeline Engineering: Build and maintain robust, automated ETL/ELT pipelines to extract and aggregate data from diverse sources including our SaaS platform databases (SQL, MongoDB), Salesforce, Gainsight, and other external APIs.
  • Customer-Facing Analytics: Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to design the underlying data architecture for embedded, customer-facing analytics within the Incident IQ platform.
  • Data Quality & Governance: Establish and enforce data governance, quality checks, and performance optimization practices to ensure high data integrity and rapid query response times.

Senior Data Engineer Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in Data Engineering, BI Engineering, Analytics Engineering, or Data Architecture, specifically within a high-growth SaaS environment.
  • Data Warehousing: Deep expertise in modern cloud data warehousing solutions (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Synapse, or AWS Redshift) and data lake architectures.
  • Pipeline Development: Proven experience building complex ETL/ELT pipelines using tools like dbt, Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or similar orchestration frameworks.
  • Database Mastery: Advanced proficiency in complex SQL, query tuning, and working with both relational (SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases.
  • SaaS Integrations: Hands-on experience extracting and integrating data from enterprise GTM tools such as Salesforce, Gainsight, Marketo, or similar platforms.
  • Programming: Proficiency in languages such as Python, Scala, or C# for data manipulation and automation.

Senior Data Engineer Personality & Soft Skills:

  • Strategic Builder: You don't just write scripts; you think holistically about how data architecture drives business outcomes and product differentiation.
  • Cross-Functional Communicator: You can translate complex technical data models into plain business language for stakeholders, and vice versa.
  • Autonomous Ownership: You thrive in environments where you can take a high-level goal, determine the technical path, and execute with minimal hand-holding.
  • Inquisitive Problem Solver: You are naturally curious about how the business operates and how data can be used to uncover hidden efficiencies.
  • Collaborative Team Player: Focused on the success of the platform and the company over personal credit.

What makes Incident IQ different:

  • We facilitate whole-person growth where employees can develop personally as well as professionally.
  • We offer an energetic and collaborative environment; everyone's opinion matters!
  • We produce software that empowers K-12 schools to run efficiently, allowing for a better classroom experience for students to THRIVE!
  • We provide excellent work/life balance. Two amazing offices - a Downtown Atlanta office location and one at Halcyon in Alpharetta!

Incident IQ offers a competitive salary based on experience with a benefits package for full-time employees that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401k match, and paid-time off (PTO).

Incident IQ is an Equal Opportunity Employer
