As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral position structural biology in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Position Structural Biology vs Postdoctoral Position Molecular Biology?

AspectPostdoctoral Position Structural BiologyPostdoctoral Position Molecular Biology
Required CredentialsPhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, or related fieldPhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focusing on X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, or NMR techniquesLabs working on gene expression, cloning, and molecular assays
Employer & Industry UsageResearch institutes, biotech, pharma companies specializing in structural analysisAcademic, biotech, and pharma sectors focusing on gene and protein function

Postdoctoral Position Structural Biology typically involves techniques like X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM to study molecular structures, whereas Postdoctoral Position Molecular Biology focuses on gene and protein function analysis. Both roles require a PhD in related fields and are common in research settings, but they differ in technical focus and laboratory environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Structural Biology, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Structural Biology, you need a PhD in biochemistry, structural biology, or a related field, with strong expertise in protein expression, purification, and characterization. Proficiency in technical tools such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, NMR spectroscopy, and data analysis software (e.g., Phenix, RELION) is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving skills, scientific curiosity, and effective collaboration and communication abilities help you excel in multidisciplinary research environments. These skills are crucial for advancing scientific discoveries, publishing impactful research, and contributing to team success in complex structural biology projects.

What is a postdoctoral position in structural biology?

A postdoctoral position in structural biology is a temporary research role typically taken after completing a PhD, focused on studying the structures of biological molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. Researchers in this position use techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and NMR spectroscopy to understand molecular function and interactions. The goal is to deepen scientific understanding, develop specialized skills, and contribute to advances in areas like drug discovery or disease research. These positions often last two to four years and can help prepare researchers for academic, industry, or government careers.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in structural biology, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in structural biology often encounter challenges such as mastering advanced instrumentation (e.g., cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography), managing complex interdisciplinary collaborations, and balancing independent research with project deadlines. To address these challenges, it's beneficial to engage in regular training sessions, actively seek mentorship from senior scientists, and participate in group meetings to stay aligned with team goals. Building strong communication skills and establishing a clear research plan can also help postdocs navigate technical and collaborative hurdles effectively.
