What is a postdoctoral position in political science?

A postdoctoral position in political science is a temporary academic role intended for individuals who have recently completed their Ph.D. in political science or a related field. Postdocs typically conduct independent research, collaborate with faculty, publish scholarly work, and may teach courses. These positions help researchers deepen their expertise, develop new skills, and prepare for permanent academic or policy-oriented careers. Postdoctoral appointments usually last from one to three years and are often funded by universities, research institutes, or external grants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral researcher in political science, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Political Science, you need a Ph.D. in political science or a closely related field, along with expertise in research design, data analysis, and academic publishing. Familiarity with statistical software (such as Stata, R, or SPSS), qualitative analysis tools, and experience with academic databases are typically required. Strong written communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help you excel in publishing, grant writing, and interdisciplinary projects. These skills are crucial for producing impactful research, securing funding, and advancing your academic career.

Job description

The Department of History, Anthropology, and Political Science in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Steubenville, Ohio invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track positionโ€”professorial rank dependent on experienceโ€”to begin in August 2026. Franciscan University is an academically excellent and passionately Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition, located 24 miles west of Pittsburgh, Pa. International Airport.

The ideal candidate could teach across these fields in political science: American politics/government, political philosophy, American constitutional law, and international politics. Some knowledge of and interest in Catholic social teaching is also important. Must possess a Ph.D. in political science. Primary stress is on undergraduate teaching, but the candidate must also have a commitment to ongoing research and publication efforts and other scholarly activity. Previous track record of publications is helpful. Must firmly support the Universityโ€™s strong Catholic mission and be faithful to the Churchโ€™s teachings. Duties may also include the directorship of the program, academic advising, advising student co-curricular political science club, and helping plan occasional Department-sponsored guest lectures on campus.

Franciscan University of Steubenville is an equal opportunity employer.
