It involves conducting advanced research in areas such as coordination chemistry, catalysis, materials science, or bioinorganic chemistry. Postdocs work under the supervision of a principal investigator, contribute to publications, and may have teaching or mentoring responsibilities. The position typically lasts one to three years and helps researchers gain experience before pursuing academic, industry, or government roles.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in a postdoctoral position in inorganic chemistry?

A typical day for a postdoctoral researcher in inorganic chemistry involves designing and conducting experiments in the lab, analyzing data, and troubleshooting synthetic procedures. You’ll often collaborate with other researchers, faculty members, and sometimes industry partners, sharing results and contributing to group meetings or seminars. Writing scientific papers, grant proposals, and occasionally mentoring graduate or undergraduate students are also common responsibilities. The work environment is usually fast-paced and research-driven, providing ample opportunities for skill development and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a postdoctoral position in inorganic chemistry?

A Postdoctoral Position in Inorganic Chemistry requires a completed Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field with demonstrated expertise in inorganic synthesis, characterization, and analysis. Familiarity with advanced instrumentation such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, and spectroscopic methods, as well as data analysis software, is typically necessary. Position Summary
The postdoctoral position will be part of a team effort to investigate HIV-induced vascular dysfunction and neuroAIDS molecular mechanisms using in vitro and in vivo (animal models) approaches. Specifically, the person will utilize HIV mouse models and HIV-1 infected cellular models to conduct experiments investigating the molecular events associated with cellular and vascular dysfunction in neuroAIDS. These studies will involve advanced molecular biology, including single cell transcriptomics, genomics and epigenomics, data analysis and interpretation. Additionally, molecular and cell biology techniques include molecular cloning, gene transfection and expression, siRNA technology, qPCR, FACS analysis, confocal imaging, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, ELISA, Western blots, and other protein chemistry techniques. The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated and have significant experience in these molecular and cell biology techniques; and preferably experience working with laboratory animals, including animal injection, collection and processing of animal tissues and biological fluids; and analyses of these samples. The candidate should be able to design and perform experiments with minimal supervision, critically analyze the results, summarize, present, and discuss the results with other team members, and help write manuscripts for publications.
Required Qualifications
PhD
Supplemental Qualifications
Ability to perform in vivo experiments with mice (including drug treatment/injection, blood collection, tissue harvesting, downstream analyses of blood and tissues); experience in molecular biology, single cell transcriptomics, genomics and/or epigenomics analyses.
