Postdoctoral Position In Peptide Synthesis information

What is a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis?

A Postdoctoral Position in Peptide Synthesis is a research-focused role for individuals who have recently completed their Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. The primary responsibility is to design, synthesize, and characterize peptides for various scientific studies, often in drug discovery or biomedical research. Postdocs in this area may also be involved in developing new synthetic methodologies, analyzing experimental data, and publishing their findings. These roles typically provide training and experience necessary for an academic or industry career in chemical and biological sciences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis?

To thrive in a Postdoctoral Position in Peptide Synthesis, you need a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field with a solid background in peptide synthesis and purification techniques. Experience with analytical tools such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, and peptide synthesizers, as well as familiarity with relevant software, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication skills help you excel in multidisciplinary research environments. These skills ensure the successful design, synthesis, and analysis of peptides, contributing to impactful research outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced in a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in peptide synthesis often encounter challenges such as optimizing synthetic routes for complex peptides, managing the purification of difficult sequences, and troubleshooting low yields or unexpected side reactions. These hurdles can be addressed by staying current with the latest literature, using advanced purification techniques like HPLC, and collaborating closely with other chemists or biochemists in the lab. Open communication with mentors and team members also helps in brainstorming solutions and sharing best practices, fostering a collaborative environment that is essential for overcoming technical obstacles.

Job description

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a motivated Project Chemist to support routine LC-MS–based analysis in a fast-paced laboratory environment. This role is responsible for the timely and reliable execution of LC-MS/MS workflows, including sample preparation, instrument operation, troubleshooting, and data review. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with minimal supervision, maintaining instrument performance, and delivering high-quality analytical results in a timely manner.

What You Will Do

  • Perform routine LC-MS based assays including peptide mapping, intact mass analysis and protein/small molecule quantitation in a timely and compliant manner
  • Prepare samples, standards, mobile phases, buffers, and other laboratory solutions
  • Operate and maintain LC-MS/MS and HPLC/UHPLC systems following SOPs
  • Conduct routine analytical runs and monitor instrument performance
  • Review, organize, interpret, and document analytical data and laboratory records
  • Identify and report unexpected test results, providing initial troubleshooting where applicable.
  • Perform system suitability, calibration, and QC checks
  • Troubleshoot basic instrument and method issues
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, inventory, and organization
  • Support method optimization and validation activities as appropriate
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to support project timelines and deliverables

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS instrumentation and workflows
  • Experience with mass spectrometry–based protein and peptide characterization, including sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis, preferred
  • Experience with LC-MS/MS quantitation using MRM and/or SIR acquisition modes preferred
  • Hands-on experience with HPLC or UHPLC systems
  • Familiarity with biological and/or chemical sample matrices
  • Experience with basic wet chemistry and sample preparation techniques
  • Familiarity with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ICH)
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and documentation practices
  • Comfortable working with laboratory software and data management systems
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with HPLC, UPLC, and MS instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of peptide synthesis and purification techniques.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.
  • Understanding of protein chemistry and post-translational modifications.
