What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Dielectrics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Dielectrics, you need an advanced degree (typically a PhD) in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering, with expertise in dielectric materials and related research techniques. Experience using laboratory instrumentation, data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Origin), and familiarity with scientific publishing is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective written and verbal communication skills are crucial for collaborating with research teams and disseminating findings. These skills ensure rigorous experimentation, meaningful contributions to scientific knowledge, and successful advancement in competitive academic or industry environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a postdoctoral position focusing on dielectric materials research?

One common challenge in a postdoctoral position specializing in dielectric materials is balancing hands-on experimental work with the need to stay current on rapidly evolving literature. Postdocs often work in interdisciplinary teams, coordinating with physicists, chemists, and engineers, which requires strong collaboration and communication skills. Additionally, meeting project milestones while publishing in high-impact journals can be demanding, as funding and future career opportunities often depend on research output. Navigating these challenges helps develop valuable project management and technical expertise.

What is a postdoctoral position in dielectric studies?

A postdoctoral position in dielectric studies is a temporary research role, usually undertaken after earning a PhD, that focuses on investigating the electrical insulating properties of materials (dielectrics). Researchers in these positions work on projects related to materials science, electrical engineering, or physics, aiming to advance knowledge of how dielectrics behave under various conditions. These roles often involve laboratory work, data analysis, publishing scientific papers, and collaborating with other scientists. The position is typically intended to further develop the researcher's expertise and prepare them for independent academic or industry careers.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Position In Dielectric vs Postdoctoral Position In Materials Science?

AspectPostdoctoral Position In DielectricPostdoctoral Position In Materials Science
Required credentialsPhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldsPhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related fields
Work environmentResearch labs focusing on electrical properties and dielectric materialsResearch labs covering broad materials research including metals, polymers, ceramics
Employer and industry usageUniversities, government labs, industry focusing on electronic materials

The Postdoctoral Position In Dielectric typically focuses on electrical properties and dielectric materials, requiring expertise in physics or electrical engineering. In contrast, the Postdoctoral Position In Materials Science covers a broader range of materials research, including metals, polymers, and ceramics. Both roles involve research in laboratory settings and are common in academia and industry, but the dielectric position is more specialized in electrical properties.

POSITION SPECIFICS
A postdoctoral position is available in the research lab of Dr. Tim Miyashiro within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The Pennsylvania State University.
The Miyashiro lab investigates mechanisms of bacterial colonization of hosts using the squid-Vibrio model system using a range of techniques including animal studies, genomics, and molecular biology.
Responsibilities will include providing intellectual leadership in experimental design, execution, and interpretation of results. This person will also assist with writing publications and assuring scientific rigor, consistency, and record keeping within the labs, and is expected to participate in all aspects of the labs, including squid-colonization assays. Candidates must have a background in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, including protein identification, quantitation, and thermal proteome profiling, and in mass spectrometry-based targeted and untargeted metabolomics. In addition, the candidate should have experience with biochemical assays assessing biomolecular interactions. Experience with bacterial genetics and molecular cloning is expected.
Applicants must hold a PhD in microbiology or equivalent life-sciences field.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications must be submitted electronically. Qualified candidates should submit the following:
