Department SummaryThe Mathematics Department's mission is to introduce students to mathematics and statistics as important areas of human thought, to give students the mathematical and statistical knowledge necessary to teach mathematics at the secondary or elementary level, to prepare students for careers in statistics, data science, actuarial science, business, government, and industry, to serve the needs of students in fields that rely on mathematics and statistics, and to prepare students for graduate studies in mathematics and statistics. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with optional concentrations in pure mathematics and/or statistics, as well as minors in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science. We also offer graduate programs leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics. The Mathematics Department is located in the new $100M Dana Mohler-Faria Center for Science and Mathematics. In addition to serving approximately 250 majors, we provide a large number of courses for the general student population.

Essential DutiesThe Department of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University seeks a qualified and committed one-year full-time temporary faculty member for the 2026-2027 academic year. The level of appointment (Instructor/Assistant Professor) depends on the highest degree held by the successful applicant, with a terminal degree being required for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor.
BSU faculty members teach 12 contact hours each semester. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses both within and beyond the mathematics major, ranging from introductory to more advanced. One-year temporary faculty members also participate in committee work and in departmental curriculum development. Successful candidates will work with their colleagues to help meet the mission of the department in serving and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse campus community.
Required QualificationsA Master's degree in Mathematics, Applied Math, Statistics, Data Science, or Education with a concentration in one of these areas is required.
Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and service, as well as demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
They should also have an ability to work collaboratively and the ability to communicate effectively.
Preferred QualificationsAn MA, MS, or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Math, or Data Science is strongly preferred
Teaching experience or significant coursework in one or more of the areas of Statistics, Data Science, or Discrete Mathematics is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to teach a range of lower-level, high-demand service courses, including discrete mathematics, statistics, and developmental mathematics, in support of Mathematics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, and other related programs.

Salary is commensurate with experience in accordance with the Appendix O of the
MSCA contract. A reasonable starting salary range to expect for a new full-time, temporary faculty member appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor is $65,000 to $75,000.
