What is a postdoctoral position in animal communication?

A Postdoctoral Position in Animal Communication is a temporary research role for individuals who have recently completed their Ph.D. in fields such as biology, psychology, or animal behavior. The position typically involves conducting advanced research on how animals communicate using vocalizations, signals, or other behaviors. Postdocs collaborate with principal investigators, mentor students, publish findings, and may help design experiments or analyze data. These positions help early-career scientists deepen their expertise and prepare for academic or research-intensive careers.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers in a postdoctoral position focused on animal communication?

Postdoctoral researchers in animal communication often encounter challenges such as designing experiments that accurately interpret complex animal behaviors and vocalizations, managing long and sometimes unpredictable fieldwork hours, and ensuring ethical treatment of animals. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams—including biologists, ecologists, and data analysts—is common and essential for robust research outcomes. Additionally, balancing independent research with publishing, grant writing, and mentoring responsibilities can be demanding but offers valuable opportunities for professional growth and skill development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral researcher in animal communication, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Animal Communication, you typically need a PhD in biology, zoology, or a related field, along with expertise in animal behavior and communication. Familiarity with technical tools such as bioacoustics analysis software, statistical packages (e.g., R, MATLAB), and field recording equipment is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective scientific communication are important soft skills for collaborating with research teams and publishing findings. These skills ensure high-quality research, accurate data interpretation, and meaningful scientific contributions to the field.

Job description

Description
The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to be deeply embedded in a research group that utilizes advanced ultrasound methods for both cardiovascular imaging as well as cardiac ablation (using high-intensity thermal ultrasound). The position will be primary responsible for fabrication, characterization (both electrical and acoustic) and pre-clinical implementation (as part of a team performing both ex-vivo and large animal in-vivo studies) of catheter-based cardiac/myocardial ablation. The clinical applications investigated will include ventricular tachycardia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy septal reduction therapy. Opportunities will be available to interface with and participate in research projects in partner laboratories within the Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound.
Core Duties:
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques to rapidly fabricate intracardiac ultrasound ablation catheters, ensuring consistency to allow comparisons of use in large-animal scientific studies.
  • Characterizes and validates fabricated devices acoustically and electronically
  • Participates in animal research by operating experimental ultrasound devices

In addition to disseminating results at major conferences and in peer-reviewed journals, postdocs are encouraged and mentored in writing grant proposals. A notable feature of APL postdoc positions is the ability to submit grant proposals as PIs under supervision, with the goal of establishing an independent research program and career path.
The postdoc will be based at the University of Washington - Seattle Campus. The preferred start date is June 1 or July 1, 2024, and has funding available for 2 years.
Salary range: Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. See current salary scale for Postdoctoral titles at https://hr.uw.edu/labor/academic-and-student-unions/uaw-postdocs/uaw-postdoc-contract The base salary for this Postdoctoral Scholar position will be $5,900 - $6,100 per month ($70,800 - $73,200) per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
The position is open to capable doctoral recipients in research fields including engineering and other related fields.
Candidates must have experience with transducer and catheter fabrication from raw materials including soldering, irrigation, air-backing, sealing, and epoxy. Electronic and acoustic ultrasound characterization knowledge a must. Candidates will need programming skills in MATLAB and CAD software skills. The ability to communicate scientific results to both broad and expert audiences, orally and in writing, is indispensable to this position.
University of Washington postdoctoral scholar appointments are for a temporary, defined period not to exceed five years/60 months, including any previous postdoctoral experiences.
Application Instructions
Each applicant will be expected to submit:
A CV including demonstrated scholarly output (e.g., publications, presentations, data analysis, code)
Cover letter or research alignment statement to include current interest and how it aligns with the goals of this project.
To request disability accommodation in the application process, please contact the UW's Disability Services Office at 206-543-6450, or 206-543-6452 (TTY), or dso@uw.edu.
