What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Multiphase Flow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Multiphase Flow, you need a Ph.D. in engineering or a related field with robust knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and multiphase flow phenomena. Proficiency with computational tools such as CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM), data analysis platforms, and programming languages like Python or MATLAB is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective scientific communication are key soft skills that set standout researchers apart. These skills ensure rigorous research output, successful collaboration, and impactful contributions to advancing the understanding of complex fluid systems.

What are some typical challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in multiphase flow, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in multiphase flow often encounter challenges such as managing complex experimental setups, interpreting large datasets, and integrating computational models with real-world results. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is common, requiring strong communication skills to bridge gaps between experimentalists, modelers, and industry partners. Overcoming these challenges involves staying updated on the latest research methods, seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, and actively participating in collaborative projects to broaden technical and professional expertise.

What are postdoctoral researchers in multiphase flow?

Postdoctoral researchers in multiphase flow are scientists who have completed their PhD and are engaged in advanced research involving the behavior of systems containing more than one phase, such as gas-liquid, liquid-solid, or gas-solid mixtures. Their work often involves experimental, theoretical, or computational studies to understand how these phases interact, which is crucial in fields like chemical engineering, energy, environmental science, and materials processing. These researchers collaborate with academic or industry teams to develop new models, conduct experiments, and publish findings that advance knowledge in the field. The postdoctoral period typically lasts several years and helps prepare researchers for independent academic or industry careers.

Job description

At Cadence, we hire and develop leaders and innovators who want to make an impact on the world of technology.

Department: CFD Research & Development

We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join our R&D team to support large-scale, high-fidelity simulation of multiphase turbulent flows. This position involves developing parallel simulation codes, implementing advanced numerical methods, and validating models for liquid spray and atomization. You will work on challenging problems in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and contribute to innovative solutions in industrial and scientific applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement simulation software for multiphase flows using concepts from Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) and diffuse interface methods.
  • Develop GPU-accelerated numerical algorithms for both incompressible and compressible regimes using an unstructured LES solver.
  • Optimize codes for high-performance computing (HPC) environments leveraging C++, MPI, CUDA, and HIP.
  • Conduct rigorous numerical analysis to ensure accuracy and stability of simulation codes.
  • Validate models against experimental data, particularly for spray dynamics.
  • Contribute to research in physics-based subgrid-scale modeling for interfacial flows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate simulation tools into broader workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field. (Summer 2026)
  • Proven R&D experience in developing CFD simulation codes for multiphase flows.
  • Strong background in multiphase flow, LES, and numerical analysis.
  • Proficiency in C++, MPI, and GPU programming (CUDA/HIP).
  • Experience with high-performance computing and parallelization techniques.
  • Familiarity with compressible flow, combustion modeling, and spray validation.

The annual salary range for California is $114,800 to $213,200. You may also be eligible to receive incentive compensation: bonus, equity, and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the salary range is a guideline and compensation may vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location.
