What does a postdoctoral fellow in environmental engineering do?

A Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Engineering typically conducts advanced research to address complex environmental issues, such as water and air pollution, waste management, or sustainable resource use. They work under the supervision of a principal investigator, design and perform experiments, analyze data, and publish findings in scientific journals. In addition to research, postdoctoral fellows may mentor students, write grant proposals, and present their work at conferences. This role is usually a temporary position intended to help early-career scientists gain additional expertise and prepare for independent research or academic positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral fellow in environmental engineering?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Engineering, you need a Ph.D. in environmental engineering or a related field, along with strong research, data analysis, and scientific writing skills. Experience with laboratory instrumentation, modeling software (such as MATLAB or COMSOL), and peer-reviewed publication processes is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are vital soft skills for contributing to multidisciplinary research teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving innovative research, publishing impactful findings, and advancing scientific knowledge in environmental engineering.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral fellows in environmental engineering, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral Fellows in Environmental Engineering often encounter challenges such as balancing independent research with collaborative projects, managing tight deadlines for publications or grant applications, and adapting to rapidly evolving research technologies. Building strong communication skills and proactively seeking mentorship within the research group can help overcome these obstacles. Additionally, engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations and participating in professional development workshops can broaden your skillset and improve your ability to tackle complex environmental problems.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Fellow Environmental Engineering vs Environmental Engineer?

AspectPostdoctoral Fellow Environmental EngineeringEnvironmental Engineer
Required CredentialsPh.D. in Environmental Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Engineering or related field, often with professional licensure
Work EnvironmentResearch institutions, universities, laboratoriesConsulting firms, government agencies, industrial companies
Employer & Industry UsageAcademic and research-focused rolesPractical application in environmental projects and compliance

While both roles focus on environmental issues, a Postdoctoral Fellow Environmental Engineering primarily conducts research and academic work, often in labs or universities. An Environmental Engineer applies engineering principles to solve real-world environmental problems in industry or government settings. The roles differ mainly in their focus—research versus application—though they share foundational knowledge and credentials.

Job description

Job Description Summary

We are excited to invite applications for the Novartis Biomedical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, a unique training opportunity designed for exceptional early-career scientists eager to tackle some of the most challenging problems in biomedical research and drug discovery.
As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will join Discovery Sciences (DSc) in San Diego and pursue an innovative research project at the forefront of biomedical science and drug discovery. You will work alongside leading scientists in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while gaining exposure to the broader ecosystem that translates scientific discovery into medicines.
Our fellows are empowered to ask bold scientific questions, apply cutting-edge technologies, and develop approaches that have the potential to transform patient care.

Job Description

Internal Job Title: Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow

Position Location: San Diego, CA, USA (Onsite)

* Novartis is unable to offer relocation support for this role: please only apply if this location is accessible for you.

* This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Please only apply if you are currently authorized to work in the US for the 3 year duration of the program.

* This is a full-time training position of up to three years in duration.

Research Opportunity

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, and the molecular targets and mechanisms of action of several promising antimalarial compounds remain incompletely understood. In this Discovery Postdoctoral Fellowship, you will develop and apply innovative target-identification and interactomics approaches to uncover the biological pathways underlying parasite survival and drug response.

The fellow will design, construct, and characterize molecular libraries and discovery resources, including display-based and related screening platforms, to enable systematic target identification and interaction mapping. These resources will be applied to identify targets and interaction partners of next-generation compounds and biological probes. The fellow will focus on developing broadly applicable molecular discovery workflows that can support target identification, protein interaction mapping, and mechanism-of-action studies.

This project places molecular discovery platform development at the center of an adaptable discovery framework, combining display technologies, protein engineering, molecular-library screening, selection design, and targeted validation to generate mechanistic insight into biological pathways. Working closely with scientists across Discovery Sciences and Global Health, the fellow will have the opportunity to engage with complementary technologies such as mass spectrometry-based proteomics, chemical proteomics, structural biology, next-generation sequencing, and computational analysis as relevant to target identification and mechanism-of-action studies. Successful outcomes are expected to generate impactful publications and provide reusable resources for future antimalarial drug discovery efforts across disease-relevant biological systems.
