As of Jun 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral dft in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers working in Density Functional Theory (DFT) positions?

Postdoctoral researchers specializing in Density Functional Theory (DFT) often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving computational methods, managing large-scale simulations, and interpreting complex data. Collaboration is key, as DFT postdocs frequently work with experimentalists and interdisciplinary teams to validate computational results. Balancing independent research with contributions to larger group projects can also be demanding but provides valuable experience for future academic or industry roles.

What are Postdoctoral DFT positions?

Postdoctoral DFT positions are research roles for individuals who have recently completed a PhD and are specializing in Density Functional Theory (DFT), a computational quantum mechanical modeling method used in physics, chemistry, and materials science. These positions typically involve advanced research on electronic structure calculations, materials design, or chemical simulations using DFT techniques. Postdoctoral researchers in this area work in academic, governmental, or industrial labs, contributing to scientific publications and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral DFT (Density Functional Theory) researcher, and why are they important?

To excel as a Postdoctoral DFT researcher, you need a strong background in computational chemistry or physics, experience with quantum mechanical modeling, and a PhD in a related field. Familiarity with DFT software packages like VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, or Gaussian, along with proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Fortran, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaborative skills set outstanding candidates apart in research environments. These competencies are crucial for conducting advanced simulations, interpreting results accurately, and contributing to impactful scientific advancements.

Job description

Post Doctoral Associate in the Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials (M2QM)
Job no: 524153
Work type: Post Doc Associate
Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Categories: Physical/Mathematical Sciences
Department:16360100 - LS-PHYSICS-GENERAL
Classification Title:
Post Doctoral Associate
Job Description:
The Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials (M2QM) at the Department of Physics, University of Florida is seeking 3 Post Doctoral Associates. See https://efrc.ufl.edu/. M2QM is a renewed (Aug. 1, 2022) Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the US Department of Energy; See https://science.osti.gov/-/media/bes/pdf/awards/EFRC-awards-sheet-8-25.pdf.
The Center programs ranges from the synthesis and characterization of these emergent new materials to a systematic computational understanding of their many-body quantum behavior. The fundamental science of the M2QM aims to address the two primary technological challenges: 1) how to create qubits for intrinsically quantum computing, and 2) how to replace elements of traditional computers and sensors with intrinsically quantum, molecule-based devices that are energy efficient as well as fast and adaptive. In this setting, reliable, swift, all-electron calculations of magnetically complex materials are crucial.
Successful candidates will work on spin transitions and magnetoelectric couplings in molecular magnetic systems, dynamics, and decoherence of spin and clock transition, spin-spin couplings, spin-environment interactions in junctions, simulation of inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) etc. Experience in DFT and beyond DFT methods, high-level quantum chemistry, machine learning, high-throughput modeling of complex materials, model Hamiltonian-based spin dynamics, or in IETS is a plus.
The Department of Physics particularly welcomes applicants who can contribute to our environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service. The university and greater Gainesville communities enjoy a variety of cultural events, restaurants, year-round outdoor recreational activities, and social opportunities.
Expected Salary:
The salary range is $48,000 - $58,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. in Physics
Preferred Qualifications:Experience in DFT and beyond DFT methods, high-level quantum chemistry, machine learning, high-throughput modeling of complex materials, model Hamiltonian-based spin dynamics, or in IETS is a plus.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
For full consideration, applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 524153), and must include: (1) a cover letter, (2) full curriculum vitae (including publication list), and (3) the names and email addresses of three references must be provided. An email will be sent to your references, requesting them to upload their confidential letter to the submission packet. Please also indicate the research areas in which you are interested. For more information, please contact Professor Hai-Ping Cheng, the director of M2QM (m2qm.efrc@phys.ufl.edu).
These positions are tenable for up to three years depending upon significant achievement and mutual interest. All postdoc and research scientists are expected to interact with other M2QM members and advise students.
All candidates for employment are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.
Time limited positions are based on circumstances, such as funding sources, which control the length of time for which the position is available. A time-limited position has the same rights as a position with a regular appointment modifier, except such position does not have rights provided for layoff, recall, and notice of non-reappointment. It is at the discretion of the college or unit to determine if a position is time-limited.
The selected candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States require evaluation by a professional credentialing service provider approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at http://www.naces.org/.
The University of Florida is an equal opportunity institution. Searches are conducted in accordance with Florida's Sunshine Law. If an accommodation due to disability is needed in order to apply for this position, please call (352) 392-2477 or the Florida Relay System at (800) 955-8771 (TDD).

About University of Florida

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
