What are postdocs?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Postdoc vs Research Scientist?
| Aspect | Postdoc | Research Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Doctoral degree (PhD) | Master's or PhD, often with more industry experience |
| Work Environment | Academic or research institutions | Industry, corporate R&D labs, or research organizations |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Universities, academic research centers | Private companies, government agencies, industry |
| Common Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding academic research roles | Industry research roles and career progression |
In summary, a Postdoc is primarily an academic research position focused on gaining specialized research experience after earning a PhD. A Research Scientist typically works in industry or corporate settings, often requiring similar credentials but emphasizing applied research and product development. The choice depends on whether you aim for an academic or industry career path.

Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a creative individual for a postdoctoral research associate position in ORNL’s Center for Radiation Protection Knowledge (CRPK). The candidate will work with experts in computational radiation dosimetry and risk assessment. The candidate should be an independent thinker and able to participate creatively in defining and refining research directions.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will interact with a team of scientists and engineers at ORNL in a variety of projects involving internal and external dosimetry and radiation risk analysis
- The CRPK provides technical assistance to U.S. federal agencies involved in development of federal guidance for radiation protection and develops many of the biokinetic and dosimetric models recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and applied by U.S. federal agencies
- The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist ORNL scientists involved in these efforts, to gain expertise in biokinetic and dosimetric modeling, and to assist and eventually lead in the preparation of open literature publications in these areas
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success
Basic Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in nuclear or health sciences (such as health physics, radiological health, medical physics, nuclear engineering, applied mathematics or a closely related discipline)
- Sound foundation in radiation transport, behavior of radionuclides in biological systems, and/or internal and external radiation dosimetry
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever-changing needs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in radiological risk assessment
- Experience in biokinetic model development
- Experience with Monte Carlo radiation transport software and applications
- Experience with numerical computing using programming languages such as C++, Python, etc
- Author or co-author of open literature publications
Special Requirements:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
