Job Description

The Lab for AI in Teaching & Learning (LAITL) in the Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence and the Learning Analytics and Measurement in Behavioral Sciences (LAMBS) Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame invite applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholar position.

The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year based on satisfactory performance. This position is jointly supported by LAITL and the LAMBS Lab, with primary affiliation with LAITL under the supervision of Dr. G. Alex Ambrose and secondary affiliation with LAMBS under the supervision of Dr. Ying "Alison" Cheng.

  • The successful candidate will join a collaborative, cross-functional team working at the intersection of AI, teaching and learning, and faculty development.
  • The scholar will play a central role in designing, leading, and studying faculty development initiatives focused on AI literacy, fluency, and pedagogy.
  • The position emphasizes applied educational development, translating AI research into practical classroom workflows, assessment redesign, and institutional strategy.
  • The scholar will contribute to advancing Notre Dame's leadership in AI-enabled teaching, learning, and responsible innovation.

Duties:

  • Designing and facilitating faculty development programs, including supporting the AI Academy, to build instructor capacity in AI literacy and pedagogy
  • Conducting applied and design-based research on the use of AI in teaching and learning, including evaluation of impacts on student learning and faculty practice
  • Partnering with faculty to redesign curriculum and assessments, including development of AI-resilient and AI-augmented assignments
  • Supporting development and implementation of institutional AI literacy frameworks aligned with emerging national and global standards
  • Opportunities in teaching one course and two workshops per year related to AI and teaching and learning
  • Contributing to grant writing, including development of at least one proposal annually
  • Contributing to research dissemination, including conference presentations and scholarly publications
  • Supporting and mentoring undergraduate research assistants and AI Coaches 

The start date of the position is flexible.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a doctoral degree in Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, Educational Statistics or Measurement, Education Technology, Higher Education, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field by time of hire, and experience conducting research or applied work in educational settings. 

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Experience designing or facilitating workshops or adult professional learning
  • Experience teaching (or as a teaching assistant) in higher education contexts
  • Experience conducting applied or mixed-methods research

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with generative AI tools, including LLMs, prompt engineering, and AI-assisted workflows
  • Ability to translate technical AI concepts into accessible, pedagogically meaningful practices
  • Experience with faculty development, instructional design, or educational innovation initiatives
  • Record or strong trajectory of publication in relevant fields such as learning sciences, AI in education, higher education, or HCI
  • Experience leading or contributing to interdisciplinary teams
  • Strong project management, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Interest in contributing to institutional strategy and implementation of AI in higher education

Hiring Pay Range: 70,000.00 plus fringe
