Postdoc Fluid information

What is a postdoc in fluid mechanics?

A Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics is a researcher who has completed their PhD and is engaged in advanced research related to the behavior and dynamics of fluids, such as liquids and gases. Postdoctoral researchers in this field work in academic, government, or industry labs, often focusing on areas like turbulence, computational fluid dynamics, or experimental fluid flow. Their work typically involves conducting experiments, developing simulations, publishing research papers, and collaborating with other scientists. The role is usually temporary, lasting from one to three years, and helps scholars deepen their expertise while preparing for permanent academic or industry positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoc in fluid mechanics?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fluid Mechanics, you need an advanced degree (Ph.D.) in engineering, physics, or a related field, with strong expertise in fluid dynamics and applied mathematics. Proficiency with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, simulation tools, and programming languages like Python or MATLAB is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective scientific communication set candidates apart. These skills are crucial for conducting innovative research, publishing results, and collaborating in interdisciplinary academic or industrial teams.

What opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration can a postdoc in fluid mechanics expect within a research institution?

As a Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics, you will often collaborate with researchers from related fields such as physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, and computational modeling. Many projects require interdisciplinary teamwork, particularly when tackling complex problems like turbulence modeling, microfluidics, or environmental fluid dynamics. This collaborative environment not only broadens your technical expertise but also enhances your professional network. Engaging in interdisciplinary research can also lead to co-authored publications and open pathways to new research directions or industry partnerships.

Job description

Senior R&D Thermal Engineer

Are you interested in joining a mission-driven, disruptive technology company at the ground floor? Accelsius is revolutionizing data center cooling through advanced direct-to-chip, two-phase cooling technology — solving one of the most pressing thermal and environmental challenges in the rapidly expanding digital infrastructure market.

We are seeking a highly motivated and hands-on Senior R&D Thermal Engineer to support the development of next-generation two-phase cooling solutions. This role is ideal for a technically rigorous, innovative engineer who thrives in a fast-paced R&D environment and is excited to translate advanced thermo-fluid science into real-world hardware solutions.

This position reports directly to the Principal Engineer and works cross-functionally with engineering, product, and leadership teams to advance Accelsius’ core cooling technologies.

While we anticipate this role may be well-suited for an early-career Ph.D. graduate (0–3 years of industry experience), candidates with varying levels of experience will be considered.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Design, model, prototype, and test advanced two-phase cooling systems for data center applications
  • Conduct experimental testing and performance validation of thermal-fluid systems
  • Develop analytical and numerical models to support product design and optimization
  • Contribute to invention disclosures and support patent application development
  • Author technical papers, draft research proposals, and present findings at conferences and industry forums
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to transition R&D concepts into scalable product solutions
  • Document experimental results and maintain rigorous engineering records

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related heat transfer/thermo-fluid discipline
  • 0–3 years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience (additional experience considered)
  • Strong foundation in thermo-fluid sciences, including both modeling and experimental work
  • Hands-on experience building and testing hardware related to two-phase heat transfer systems, such as:
    • Boiling and condensation systems
    • Thermosyphons
    • Heat pipes or vapor chambers
  • Demonstrated ability to translate theory into practical hardware solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • Postdoctoral research experience
  • Experience working in startup or fast-paced R&D environments
  • Familiarity with data center thermal management applications

Accelsius offers a competitive salary with equity, a full range of benefits including medical and dental, 401K, and unlimited PTO.

The position is based in Austin, Texas.

This position includes the responsibilities outlined above and may also encompass additional duties as assigned to meet business and compliance needs.

Accelsius does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, or based on an individual's status in any group or class protected by applicable federal, state or local law.
