Job description

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Genentech.

The Opportunity:

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available for a highly motivated and independent candidate to join the laboratory of Dr. Marc Kschonsak in the Protein Engineering and Structural Biology Group within the Protein Sciences Department at Genentech. In this role, you will answer fundamental questions in membrane protein biology, focusing on the structural and functional mechanisms of transmembrane proteins, and their associated macromolecular signaling complexes

The Kschonsak Lab works on the biochemical and structural mechanisms of novel membrane proteins and their larger, endogenous signaling assemblies. We leverage a highly multidisciplinary approach-combining cryo-EM, endogenous purifications, and functional reconstitution-to understand how these complex systems operate across both recombinant and endogenous contexts.

In this role, you will have access to state-of-the-art structural biology and biophysical equipment and facilities. In addition, you will have opportunities to collaborate with other labs both within Genentech and in academia, and present your work at conferences.

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in a Relevant Field: You hold a Ph.D. with a proven track record of creativity, rigor, and success in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field, as exemplified by first-author publication(s) in high-impact journals.

  • Protein Purification: Experience with expression and purification of challenging proteins is required

  • Structural Biology Foundation: Experience with single-particle cryo-EM and/or X-ray crystallography sample preparation, data collection, and processing is required.

  • Scientific Independence: You are independent and capable of designing, executing, and troubleshooting complex biochemistry and structural biology workflows to answer challenging biological questions.

  • Collaborative Spirit: A strong collaborative spirit to work with others in a team to bring projects to fruition is needed.

  • Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Membrane Protein Expertise: Successful experience with the expression and purification of membrane proteins is highly desirable.

  • Biochemical Functional Assays: Successful experience with the reconstitution of membrane proteins into lipid environments (e.g., liposomes, nanodiscs) and establishing functional transport or signaling assays.

  • Endogenous Purifications: Experience in isolating endogenous complexes from tissues or cell lines.

  • Cellular Assays: Experience with mammalian cell culture, heterologous expression, or cellular functional assays
