Postdoc Acoustic information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Acoustics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc in Acoustics, you need an advanced degree (typically a PhD) in acoustics, physics, engineering, or a related field, with strong research and analytical skills. Experience with simulation and modeling software (such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or LabVIEW), data analysis tools, and possibly signal processing certifications is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, written and verbal communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for success in collaborative research environments. These competencies enable effective investigation, innovation, and dissemination of findings in the complex and interdisciplinary field of acoustics.

What are Postdoc Acoustic positions?

Postdoc Acoustic positions are research-focused roles for individuals who have recently completed a PhD in acoustics or a related field. These positions typically involve conducting advanced research in areas such as sound propagation, noise control, audio signal processing, or environmental acoustics. Postdoctoral researchers in acoustics may work in academic, governmental, or industry settings, collaborating with other scientists and engineers. These roles are temporary, often lasting two to three years, and are designed to help researchers deepen their expertise and build their academic or professional careers.

What are the typical research collaboration opportunities for a Postdoc in Acoustics?

Postdocs in Acoustics often have the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, physicists, and computer scientists, both within their institution and through external partnerships. These collaborations may involve joint research projects, co-authored publications, and participation in international conferences. Working closely with faculty mentors and industry partners can also provide valuable networking and professional development opportunities, helping postdocs broaden their expertise and enhance their career prospects.

What is the difference between Postdoc Acoustic vs Postdoc Speech Processing?

AspectPostdoc AcousticPostdoc Speech Processing
Required CredentialsPhD in Acoustics, Physics, or related fieldPhD in Speech Processing, Computer Science, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, industry R&DResearch labs, universities, industry R&D
Industry UsageAudio analysis, noise reduction, sound qualitySpeech recognition, language processing, voice interfaces
Common Search IntentResearch in acoustics, sound analysisSpeech technology, voice recognition research

Postdoc Acoustic and Postdoc Speech Processing roles often share similar credentials and work environments. However, Postdoc Acoustic focuses on sound and noise analysis, while Postdoc Speech Processing specializes in speech recognition and language technologies. Both are vital in audio-related research but serve different application areas within the broader field of audio and speech sciences.

The National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to advance work in acoustic detection and classification. This position will contribute to multiple active projects related to undersea acoustic monitoring. Machine learning approaches for detection, classification and localizations of signals of interest to include but not limited to: marine mammal vocalizations, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), surface vessels, sonar, or changes in the biological soundscape resulting from the presence of human-made sound sources. The position is fully funded for two years. The start time is ASAP.
The NMMF is looking for a candidate with strong programming and data-analysis skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and a strong proficiency in machine learning. Candidates with experience in acoustic data acquisition and analysis are strongly preferred. As the project is in support of U.S. Navy research, U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance are required. The applicant must be able to live and work locally in San Diego, California.
This is a highly technical and data-intensive role with ample publication and collaboration opportunities.
Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research across multiple Navy acoustics projects.
  • Develop, adapt, and optimize analysis tools and workflows using programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
  • Manage and process large acoustic datasets while meeting multiple project timelines.
Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, bioacoustics, engineering).
  • Proficiency in programming (MATLAB, Python).
  • Proficiency in machine learning.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to excel working alone and collaboratively.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in acoustic analysis or signal processing.
  • Familiarity with acoustic classification methods.
Work Environment
  • Office
  • Water-side (off ocean piers)
  • Open-water (boats)
