How much do post processor cnc jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for post processor cnc in the United States is $16.74, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Post Processor CNC professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Post Processor CNC professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting post processors to support new or custom machine configurations, resolving compatibility issues between CAM software and CNC machines, and troubleshooting errors in generated G-code. Staying updated with evolving machine technologies and maintaining clear communication with machinists and programmers are vital for overcoming these challenges. Regular testing, collaboration with software vendors, and ongoing training can help ensure post processors remain efficient and error-free.

What are Post Processor CNC jobs?

Post Processor CNC jobs involve creating and maintaining software tools that translate computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) data into machine-specific instructions for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. These professionals ensure that the output from design software is compatible with the unique requirements of different CNC machines, optimizing efficiency and accuracy in manufacturing. They often work closely with engineers and machinists to troubleshoot issues and customize post processors for specific projects or machines.

What is the difference between Post Processor Cnc vs CNC Programmer?

AspectPost Processor CncCNC Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of CNC software and post processor developmentRequires programming skills and understanding of CNC machine operation
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly with CAM software and post processor filesWorks directly with CNC machines and programming languages
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing to customize machine code outputUsed to create and optimize CNC programs for machining

The main difference is that a Post Processor Cnc focuses on developing and customizing post processors to convert CAM data into machine-specific code, while a CNC Programmer creates and optimizes CNC programs directly for machining operations. Both roles require technical knowledge but serve different stages of the manufacturing process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Post Processor CNC, and why are they important?

To excel as a Post Processor CNC, you need a strong background in CNC programming, G-code/M-code interpretation, and knowledge of manufacturing processes, often supported by a degree or technical certification in engineering or machining. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (such as Mastercam, Siemens NX, or Fusion 360), machine simulation tools, and post-processing script development is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for ensuring accuracy and collaborating with machinists and engineers. These abilities ensure efficient machine operations, minimize errors, and improve overall production quality in advanced manufacturing environments.
