What is a POS Solution Architect?

POS Solution Architects are professionals who design, implement, and oversee point-of-sale (POS) systems for businesses, ensuring these systems meet business requirements and integrate seamlessly with other technologies. They analyze client needs, create technical blueprints, and guide the development and deployment of POS solutions. Their expertise ensures that payment processing, inventory management, and customer interactions at the point of sale are efficient, secure, and scalable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a POS Solution Architect?

To thrive as a POS Solution Architect, you need expertise in retail systems architecture, software development, and integration, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with POS platforms (like NCR, Oracle, or Toshiba), cloud services, API integration, and relevant certifications (e.g., TOGAF, AWS Solutions Architect) are commonly expected. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable, secure, and business-aligned POS solutions that drive seamless retail operations.

What are some common challenges faced by POS Solution Architects during system integration projects?

POS Solution Architects often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern POS platforms, ensuring compliance with data security standards (like PCI DSS), and coordinating between multiple stakeholders including vendors, IT teams, and retail staff. They must also address scalability concerns to support high transaction volumes and diverse payment methods. Effective communication, thorough documentation, and proactive problem-solving are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering seamless, robust solutions.

Ready to take your career Global?

The Director of Technical Partnerships for Global Payments (GPN) Genius POS Solutions will own the technical partnership strategy, integration governance framework, and operational execution model that enables the Genius partner ecosystem across SMB and Enterprise Restaurants, Small Business and Retail, Sports & Entertainment Venues, and Food Service Management.

This position will build and scale a high-impact technical partnership organization responsible for partner technical onboarding, integration readiness, certification programs, partner solution architecture review and alignment, integration delivery coordination, technical escalation management, support readiness, and ongoing integration lifecycle management.

The Director serves as the primary bridge between external partner technology organizations and internal Product, Engineering, Operations, and Support teams. The role ensures that strategic partner integrations are delivered efficiently, operated reliably, and scaled consistently across the Genius platform.

This position facilitates, coordinates, and influences integration planning and delivery but does not own Product Management responsibilities, product roadmap decisions, feature prioritization, engineering architecture, or engineering resource allocation. Those responsibilities remain with Product and Engineering leadership.

The Director reports directly to the VP and Head of Strategic Partnerships & Business Development for POS and Software Vertical Markets at Global Payments.

What you'll own:

Technical Partnership Strategy & Ecosystem Leadership

  • Develop and execute the technical partnership strategy supporting Genius POS across Enterprise Restaurant, SMB Restaurant, Small Business and Retail, Sports & Entertainment Venues, and Food Service Management.

  • Establish scalable technical partnership frameworks that improve partner onboarding speed, integration quality, operational reliability, and long-term partner success.

  • Define technical partner program standards, certification requirements, readiness criteria, and governance processes across the Genius ecosystem.

  • Partner with business partnership leadership to prioritize technical initiatives that support ecosystem growth, customer value, and market expansion.

  • Integration Governance & Technical Partner Enablement

  • Own the technical evaluation process for existing and prospective partners.

  • Develop and maintain integration standards, onboarding requirements, certification programs, testing protocols, and launch readiness criteria.

  • Lead partner for technical discovery, architecture reviews, implementation planning, and technical risk assessments.

  • Establish repeatable playbooks that accelerate partner onboarding while maintaining platform quality and security standards.

  • Ensure partners have the documentation, support models, tooling, and technical resources needed for successful integration of development and deployment.

Product Alignment & Integration Lifecycle Management

  • Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership to align partner integration plans with product strategies and platform capabilities.

  • Influence integration of roadmaps through technical assessments, partner demand signals, customer needs, and business value analysis.

  • Coordinate integration of delivery activities across partners, Product, Engineering, QA, Professional Services, and Support teams.

  • Own partner integration lifecycle management from technical assessment through certification, launch, support readiness, operational monitoring, enhancement coordination, and retirement planning.

  • Manage integration dependencies, launch sequencing, migration planning, and partner readiness milestones.

Partner Technical Operations & Escalation Management

  • Establish operational processes supporting ongoing integration of health and partner success.

  • Own technical escalation management for strategic partners and critical customer-impacting issues.

  • Develop governance models for issue tracking, root cause analysis, service-level expectations, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Partner with Customer Support, Operations, Technical Services, and Engineering teams to ensure timely issues of resolution and effective communication.

  • Drive ongoing improvements in integration reliability, performance, and supportability.

Security, Compliance & Technical Standards

  • Ensure all partner integrations meet required security, data privacy, compliance, and operational standards.

  • Partner with Information Security, Compliance, Risk Management, and Engineering teams to evaluate partner technical architectures and integration approaches.

  • Establish technical review processes that identify potential risks prior to implementation.

  • Support domestic and international expansion initiatives by ensuring integration models meet local technical and regulatory requirements.

Partner Certification & Program Scalability

  • Design and manage scalable certification programs for partner integrations.

  • Own certification requirements, testing methodologies, launch criteria, and recertification standards.

  • Create technical governance processes that enable ecosystem growth without creating operational bottlenecks.

  • 8+ years of experience in technical partnerships, technical program management, partner integrations, platform ecosystems, solution consulting, or related technology leadership roles.

  • Experience managing API-based integrations, SaaS ecosystems, platform partnerships, or enterprise software implementations.
