Job description

Position: POS Engineer
Duration: 8+ months
Location: Boston Support Center, MA (4 days onsite)
Must Have(s):
  1. 5 years high volume POS engineering experience
  2. 3 years edge computing in large scale environment
  3. 5 years POS hardware experience
  4. 1 year Oracle Symphony & Oracle Res

Contract | Individual Contributor
What This Role Is
We are hiring a hands-on senior consultant to help design and evaluate next-generation POS hardware and edge computing architecture for a large Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) environment as part of a team. The position is an onsite role in our Canton, MA support center.
This is not a people-manager role and not day-to-day POS support.
The focus is architecture, tradeoffs, and future-proofing-especially extending hardware life, reducing OS risk, and ensuring systems can grow with software (including AI use cases) over the next 5-10 years.
What You'll Do
โ€ข Evaluate current POS hardware and deployment models
โ€ข Evaluate edge-based architectures that:
o Reduce dependency on POS terminal OS EOS
o Allow POS logic to move off the register where appropriate
o Support 100% seamless offline operation and high-volume store environments
โ€ข Help define where workloads should run:
o POS endpoint vs store edge vs cloud
โ€ข Assess hardware and OS choices against future growth, including AI-driven workloads
โ€ข Deliver clear architecture recommendations, diagrams, and tradeoff analysis with the team
Required Experience (Must Have)
POS & QSR Experience
โ€ข Hands-on experience with large enterprise POS systems in QSR or high-volume retail
โ€ข Strong understanding of:
o Transactions
o Payments
o Peripherals
o Offline / degraded network behavior
โ€ข Experience designing around existing POS platforms, not replacing them
Edge Computing & Architecture
โ€ข Real experience designing or operating edge computing in distributed environments
โ€ข Comfortable with store-level compute models that work even when the network is down
โ€ข Experience supporting mixed fleets (legacy hardware + new stores)
POS Hardware
โ€ข Experience with enterprise POS hardware such as:
o NCR
o Oracle MICROS
o HP (or similar vendors)
โ€ข Understands hardware lifecycle realities (long refresh cycles, mixed environments)
OS & Imaging (Hands-On)
โ€ข OS imaging and lifecycle management experience
โ€ข Windows LTSC in POS environments (including tradeoffs)
โ€ข Linux for edge or backend workloads (practical use, not ideological)
Future-Ready & Capacity Planning (Critical)
โ€ข Understands how emerging technologies (e.g., AI, real-time analytics, automation) impact store compute needs
โ€ข Experience with capacity planning and technology decisions looking 3-5 years out
โ€ข Able to design architectures where software growth does not immediately force hardware upgrades
We are not looking for someone to build AI models-
we are looking for someone who understands what AI and future software demand from infrastructure.
What This Role Is NOT
โ€ข Not people management
โ€ข Not vendor ownership or procurement negotiation
โ€ข Not day-to-day POS support or store operations
โ€ข Not an AI engineering role
Ideal Candidate Summary
A senior individual contributor with deep POS and QSR experience who can combine edge computing, OS strategy, and capacity planning to deliver practical, future-ready POS architecture recommendations-without forcing unnecessary hardware refreshes.
