Description
This position is responsible for determining and coordinating reasonable accommodations and services for students with disabilities and works at our Council Bluffs campus. This individual must be knowledgeable on ADA/504 compliance. They will also provide guidance and support regarding accommodations and universal access, which requires a collaborative relationship with faculty and staff. This position supervises the Accessibility Services Assistant and schedules Sign Language Interpreters as needed.
Job Duties
  • Demonstrates IWCC's core mission, vision and values.
  • Conducts initial intake assessments of students who have applied for accommodations to ensure appropriate academic and non-academic accommodations are provided. Collects appropriate information, including verification of disability, for review and establishment of services.
  • Facilitates communication between faculty and students to ensure that appropriate academic accommodations are provided in a reasonable and timely fashion.
  • Collaborates with students, parents, support agencies, campus programs, and Residence Life as needed to ensure that appropriate accommodations are provided in a reasonable and timely manner.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the part-time Accessibility Services Assistant who performs day-to-day processing, sends communication to students and staff, and schedules tests.
  • Hires and schedules Sign Language Interpreters, and Captionists as needed; provides ongoing support and guidance to ensure high-quality services are delivered to students on a consistent basis.
  • Develops a schedule and ensures staffing each semester for sign language interpreting and captioning services for deaf or hard of hearing students who participate in college classes and campus activities to optimize services and maximize usage.
  • Manages Accessibility Services communication, including accommodation letters and forms.
  • Maintains the Accessibility Services webpage in the college's portal, ensuring the content is accurate and beneficial for students.
  • Maintains confidential files and case notes for students who request accommodations, support, or assistance.
  • Guides students with disabilities in developing independence and self-advocacy skills. Ensures students are aware of their responsibilities and Accessibility Services policies.
  • Maintains detailed records of all requests and fulfillment of technology and assistive equipment.
  • Develops and widely distributes materials to increase awareness and knowledge regarding services and processes; posts portal news items, sends multiple emails, and attends departmental and divisional meetings with faculty and staff to promote awareness and utilization of Accessibility Services.
  • Stays abreast of best practices and innovations regarding Accessibility Services; utilizes online resources and databases, engages in discourse with colleagues, communicates ideas, and implements changes as appropriate.
  • Maintains awareness of and initiates best practices of relevant legislation, including ADA, Section 504, and other relevant topics. Remains current on theory, trends, and best practices in the field.
  • Reviews Accessibility Services policies and procedures on an annual basis. Collaborates with Director of Academic Support and Dean of Student Life & Success/ADA Coordinator to update policies as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
