What is a Porous Media job?

A Porous Media job typically involves studying and analyzing materials that contain pores, such as soil, rock, membranes, and engineered composites. Professionals in this field work in industries like oil and gas, environmental engineering, biomedical engineering, and materials science. Their responsibilities may include modeling fluid flow through porous structures, conducting experiments, and developing applications for filtration, energy storage, or groundwater management. These roles often require expertise in computational simulations, laboratory testing, and applied physics or engineering principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Porous Media position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Porous Media Researcher or Engineer role, you should have a solid background in engineering, geosciences, or physics with specialized knowledge in fluid dynamics and material science. Proficiency in numerical simulation software (such as COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, or ANSYS), laboratory equipment, and the ability to analyze experimental or field data are often required, along with relevant certifications or advanced degrees. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills are critical for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects. These qualifications ensure accurate modeling, interpretation, and practical application of porous media processes in environmental, petroleum, or material science industries.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in a Porous Media research or engineering role?

A typical day in a Porous Media position often involves a mix of computational modeling, laboratory experimentation, and data analysis to study how fluids move through porous materials. Professionals frequently collaborate with geologists, engineers, or environmental scientists to design experiments, interpret results, and develop predictive models for real-world applications like groundwater management, oil recovery, or filtration systems. You may attend project meetings, present findings to your team, and write technical reports or publications. This dynamic, interdisciplinary environment encourages ongoing learning and provides a variety of challenges and opportunities for professional growth.

Job description

Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
Dr. Tugce Baser's group in the Department of Civil Engineering at Saint Louis University is seeking two highly motivated postdoctoral scholars to join their team. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to conduct innovative research focused on developing and modeling multiphysics solutions to complex problems in porous materials. Candidates with a background in experimental and/or numerical multiphysics modeling of porous media, applicable to both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments, are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be joining a team of theorists and experimentalists and will conduct research on thermally induced multiphysics behavior of porous materials with applications in permafrost and geothermal energy for resiliency and adaptive infrastructure under changing environmental conditions Collaboration with team members and the supervision and training of graduate students, as needed, are key aspects of the role.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, or Applied Physics.
A track record demonstrated in one or more of the listed disciplines.
Proven expertise in multiphysics modeling (thermal, chemical, mechanical, hydraulic, and wave propagation processes).
Proficiency in advanced programming and simulation tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, COMSOL, TOUGH, or ANSYS is highly desirable.
Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork abilities.
Capacity to work independently while effectively contributing to a collaborative team environment.
