How much do pore pressure jobs pay per hour?
What jobs pay $10,000 a month without a degree?
What are some common challenges faced by Pore Pressure Engineers during the drilling phase, and how are they addressed?
What is the difference between Pore Pressure vs Mud Engineer?
| Aspect | Pore Pressure | Mud Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Geoscience or petroleum engineering degree, specialized training in formation pressures | Petroleum engineering degree, mud logging certifications, drilling fluid expertise |
| Work Environment | Subsurface formations, drilling sites, geological labs | Drilling rigs, mud logging units, wellsites |
| Industry Usage | Used to assess formation stability and prevent blowouts | Designs and manages drilling fluids to control wellbore conditions |
While Pore Pressure involves understanding subsurface formation pressures to ensure safe drilling, a Mud Engineer focuses on managing drilling fluids to control those pressures. Both roles are essential in drilling operations but serve different functions within the industry.

Job description
Job Summary
Murphy Exploration and Production seeks a technically capable and experienced Petrophysicist for the Houston office to support offshore exploration and development activities in the Gulf of America. We are looking for a candidate with a track record of verified petrophysical evaluations of deepwater wells, support of interdisciplinary technical projects as well as planning and execution of formation evaluation programs for deep water projects.
The role calls for active participation within integrated teams, requiring seamless interaction with geoscientists, reservoir engineers, operations staff, and drilling and facilities engineers. Collaboration across these disciplines is essential for success, and candidates must excel under pressure, delivering accurate interpretations on tight timelines while maintaining composure. Strong organizational skills are crucial, as the position demands ownership of data management responsibilities, overseeing integrity and accuracy throughout each project. In addition, excellent presentation and communication abilities-both written and verbal-are required for conveying technical information to various stakeholders within the organization.
The Staff Petrophysicist will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.
Responsibilities
- Formation evaluation and development of petrophysical models for a variety of age reservoirs for offshore Gulf of America
- Actively participate with a multidisciplinary team that undertakes subsurface technical evaluations and reservoir characterization projects.
- Integration and calibration of core to wireline and LWD log data to provide volumetric determination, lithological determination, fluid contacts and completions recommendations
- Maintain and update the field specific petrophysical models, integrating and reconciling existing and future data from all subsurface disciplines
- Maintain well data for exploration and development areas
- Data collection activities include planning and execution of formation evaluation programs and procedures for coring, wireline logging, data quality control, computer processing, and data management
- Support all aspects of open hole log applications and interpretation of routine and advanced core analysis
- Perform operational petrophysics while drilling, real time evaluation, collection of formation pressures, fluid samples and rotary sidewall cores
- Liaise with core analysis, coring, mudlogging, wireline, and LWD companies and in-house experts, to verify operational procedures are being executed with high standards of safety, quality, and best practices
- Display strong organizational and communication skills, making evaluations, interpretations, and assessments available for integration by team members from assets
- Champion petrophysical knowledge sharing / mentorship across the subsurface organization
- Undertake petrophysical regional studies to support near field exploration and development teams in their efforts to evaluate new basins/plays and improve reservoir characterization of strategic assets
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Geoscience or Engineering Discipline
- Minimum 12 years of Petrophysical Engineering experience within the oil industry, service company or producer
- Deep water basin experience such as Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, or Atlantic Margins
- Experience with petrophysical software packages: Geolog. IP or Techlog experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Database management experience. Must be willing to clean data, splice logs, and manage daily reporting and data transfer while drilling wells
- Experienced in advanced methods of post core retrieval handling and analysis techniques
- Demonstrated ability to design logging programs in deepwater reservoir systems that are fit for purpose
- Able to assist in building Pore Pressure Predictions for pre-drill modeling.
- Analysis of formation pressures and samples from wireline and LWD for fluid contacts, fluid type, and reservoir quality is required
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree preferred
- Pore pressure prediction
- Multi-mineral petrophysical interpretation skills
- Image log processing and interpretation skills
- NMR processing
- Reservoir quality prediction software such as Touchstone
- Unconventional experience is a plus
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
