What does a pool installer do?

A pool installer is responsible for setting up and installing swimming pools, which can include above-ground, in-ground, or custom-designed pools. Their work involves site preparation, excavation, assembling pool structures, installing plumbing and filtration systems, and ensuring that all safety standards and local regulations are met. Pool installers may also assist with landscaping around the pool area and provide maintenance tips to new pool owners. Their goal is to ensure the pool is safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pool installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pool Installer, you need strong knowledge of construction practices, plumbing, and electrical systems, often supported by on-the-job training or relevant certifications. Experience with specialized tools such as transit levels, excavation equipment, and water testing kits is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with clients and team members are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure pools are installed safely, efficiently, and to client specifications, reducing the risk of costly errors or safety issues.

What are some common challenges a pool installer might face during an installation project?

Pool Installers often encounter challenges such as unexpected ground conditions, weather delays, and ensuring compliance with local building codes. Working with different types of soil or encountering underground obstacles can require quick problem-solving and adjustments to the installation plan. Additionally, effective communication with homeowners and coordination with electricians or landscapers is crucial for keeping projects on schedule and ensuring a high-quality final result.

Job description

About A Plus Landscaping

A Plus Landscaping designs and builds premium backyard living spaces across Lancaster County — patios, fire features, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and now, in-ground fiberglass pools. We're a fast-growing, high-standards team looking for a humble, hard-working, hungry-to-learn team member to help us deliver complete backyard transformations from start to finish.

Position Summary

This role combines two high-demand skill sets: fiberglass pool installation and outdoor living construction. You'll be part of a crew that installs fiberglass pool shells and their surrounding hardscape — patios, pool decks, retaining walls, plumbing/electrical rough-ins, and fencing — giving clients a fully integrated backyard rather than a pool that stands alone. Between pool installs, you'll rotate onto our outdoor living crews building paver patios, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and pergolas. No two days look the same, and you'll build a diverse skill set that few in this trade have.

Key Responsibilities

Fiberglass Pool Installation

  • Evaluate site conditions, establish grade, and lay out pool dimensions and orientation per plans
  • Excavate and shape the pool cavity to precise depth and slope tolerances using excavators and hand tools
  • Set, level, and plumb the fiberglass shell per manufacturer specifications and ANSI/APSP-24 standards
  • Install plumbing lines, skimmers, returns, main drains, and coordinate electrical rough-ins with subcontractors
  • Backfill around the shell with appropriate material (sand, gravel, or engineered backfill) in stages while managing water-fill levels to prevent shell distortion
  • Pour or coordinate the surrounding concrete bond beam, decking substrate, and coping installation
  • Install pool equipment pads, filtration systems, and initial start-up/water balancing
  • Ensure all work complies with local Lancaster County/PA building and pool codes and passes required inspections

Outdoor Living Construction

  • Install paver and natural stone patios, walkways, and retaining walls
  • Build outdoor kitchens, fire pits/fireplaces, pergolas, and seat walls
  • Grade and prep sites, run drainage solutions, and install landscape lighting and irrigation components as needed
  • Read and execute against design plans with a high attention to detail and finish quality
  • Operate equipment such as skid steers, mini excavators, compactors, and saws safely and efficiently

General

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized job site at all times
  • Communicate proactively with the crew lead/project manager on progress, issues, and material needs
  • Represent A Plus Landscaping professionally in front of clients
  • Support other crews and tasks as business needs require (true "diverse range of duties" role)

Qualifications

  • Experience in pool installation, hardscape/masonry, excavation, or general construction preferred; fiberglass pool experience is a strong plus but not required — we will train the right person
  • Comfortable operating or learning to operate heavy equipment (excavators, skid steers)
  • Basic understanding of plumbing, grading, and concrete work helpful
  • Valid driver's license required; ability to tow/back a trailer a plus
  • PHTA/CPO or similar pool industry certification is a bonus, not a requirement, at hire
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift 50+ lbs regularly
  • Reliable, coachable, detail-oriented, and takes pride in craftsmanship

What We Offer

  • $28-38/hour, depending on experience
  • 90-day sign-on bonus
  • Great culture and values — we invest in our people and promote from within
  • Diverse, hands-on work across pools and outdoor living — never a boring day
  • Opportunities to grow into a crew lead or specialized pool installation role as the pool division expands
