A Pom Coach is responsible for training and leading a pom team, which is a dance team that blends cheerleading motions with jazz and hip-hop dance styles. They choreograph routines, teach technique, condition athletes, and prepare them for performances or competitions. Additionally, they foster teamwork, ensure safety, and may coordinate logistics like scheduling and fundraising.

What does a pom coach do?

A typical week for a Pom Coach during the competitive season involves planning and conducting team practices, developing and refining routines, teaching new choreography, and focusing on skills such as synchronization and precision. Coaches often spend time on administrative tasks like organizing team logistics, communicating with parents, and preparing for upcoming competitions or performances. Collaboration with athletic directors, school staff, and sometimes other coaches is common to coordinate schedules and ensure compliance with regulations. Balancing preparation, teaching, and team-building activities is essential to keep athletes motivated and help the team excel throughout the season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pom coach position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pom Coach, you need in-depth knowledge of dance technique, choreography, and physical conditioning, often supported by experience in performing or teaching dance or cheer. Familiarity with music editing software, video playback tools, and, in some regions, relevant coaching certifications are valuable. Strong communication, motivational leadership, and organizational skills help a Pom Coach inspire athletes and efficiently coordinate practices and performances.
