Job description

TL;DR Kharon is seeking a full-time, Data Operations Research Analyst who MUST HAVE reading proficiency in Chinese (traditional/simplified) to join our team based in Washington D.C. This positions requires you to be in-office 4 days a week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monitoring new sanctions, enforcement actions, and policy activity by regulatory agencies for developments relevant to Kharon's products
  • Conducting research on issues in international affairs that impact business risks and identifying relevant data sources
  • Driving the curation, publication, maintenance, and quality assurance of datasets
  • Performing data validation and reconciliation to support new products and partnership initiatives
  • Accurately perform detailed quality assurance of data and developing additional tooling to support these tasks as necessary
  • Write original code needed to collect primary data in any number of different languages.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally to build out new research and develop insights based on Kharon's existing content
  • Reporting key metrics on projects and share regular updates with stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business Administration, International Relations, Political Science, Security Studies, Regional Studies, History, Sociology, or a related field
  • Experience with sanctions, export controls, anti-money laundering or countering the financing of terrorism
  • Experience researching issues of international security and economy in high-risk jurisdictions
  • Understanding of securities markets, financial instruments, and investment risk
  • Must have reading proficiency in Chinese (Traditional/Simplified)
  • 2+ years experience in coding languages (Python strongly preferred)
  • 1+ year experience in using scraping and data parsing packages (e.g., Selenium, Scrapy, proxies, Captcha BeautifulSoup, pandas, etc.)
  • Experience with or willingness to learn SQL
  • Experience with data analysis, data visualization, and graph databases (Neo4J)
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, XPath, JSON, etc)

Reporting to the Associate Director of Data Operations, the core of this position is dedicated to conducting open-source research on a variety of foreign affairs and national security issues. More specifically, you will be researching, analyzing, and interpreting data as it relates to sanctions, export controls, and criminal/illicit networks. You will be responsible for the diligent pursuit of data as it relates to ever-evolving market demand and our client inquiries. Working collaboratively with the Kharon Research team, you will contribute to the development of new datasets and update existing ones, identifying and utilizing new sources and developing subject matter expertise on the various strategic topics. This includes monitoring new sanctions, enforcement actions, and policy activity by regulatory agencies, as well as conducting research on international affairs that affect business risks. Leveraging your sound analytical approach and research techniques, you will identify data typologies, perform detailed quality assurance, validate and reconcile data, and support new product and partnership initiatives. You'll also play a key role in curating, publishing, and maintaining datasets, and may write original code to collect primary data from Chinese language sources. Cross functional collaboration is essential as you help build out new research, surface insights from existing content, and report key project metrics to internal stakeholders.

The base salary range at Kharon is set between $68,000-$78,000. Please note that this figure does not necessarily include potential bonuses, commissions, benefits, or equity that may be part of the overall compensation package.
