What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Political Risk Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Political Risk Analyst, you need expertise in international relations, political science, and economics, often supported by a relevant degree or advanced education. Familiarity with data analysis tools, geopolitical databases, and research platforms like Factiva or LexisNexis is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and cultural awareness set top performers apart in this field. These skills are essential for accurately assessing global risks and providing actionable insights to help organizations make informed strategic decisions.

What is the difference between Political Risk vs Compliance Analyst?

Political Risk and Compliance Analyst roles share some credentials but differ in focus. Political Risk involves assessing geopolitical threats, while Compliance Analysts ensure adherence to laws and regulations. Both roles are vital in global business environments but serve distinct functions.

What is political risk and what does a political risk analyst do?

Political risk refers to the likelihood that political decisions, events, or instability in a country will affect the business environment or investment outcomes. A political risk analyst evaluates these risks by monitoring global political developments, conducting research, and providing reports and forecasts to help organizations make informed decisions. Their work may involve analyzing government stability, regulatory changes, conflict, or elections to assess how these factors might impact markets, investments, or operations abroad.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals working in political risk analysis, and how can they effectively address them?

Professionals in political risk analysis often face challenges such as rapidly changing global events, limited access to reliable information, and the complexity of assessing multiple geopolitical factors simultaneously. Staying updated through trusted news sources, building a strong network of regional experts, and using analytical frameworks can help address these challenges. Collaboration with colleagues in economics, security, and legal teams is also essential, as it provides a broader perspective and more robust risk assessments.

Job description

As part of an industry-leading team, you will help empower results for our clients by delivering innovative and effective solutions supporting commercial risk. As a SVP (Broker) you will report directly to the US Practice Leader for Structured Credit & Political Risk. This is a hybrid role with the flexibility to work from our New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Houston or the San Francisco office.

Aon is in the business of better decisions

At Aon, we shape decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world.

As an organization, we are united through trust as one inclusive team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.

What the day will look like

The SVP is responsible for the management of a sophisticated portfolio of Structured Credit and Political Risk accounts, including placement and service, and for ensuring all client deliverables are met. This individual is also accountable for representing the practice on new business and expansion opportunities, and for leading by example as a strong sponsor of Aon’s Leadership Model—supporting colleagues, promoting connectivity and collaboration across offices and functions, and fostering the sharing of knowledge, best practices and resources.

  • Build and maintain a coordinated Structured Credit & Political Risk broking platform that delivers value for clients, colleagues, and key insurance markets.
  • Support and execute a clear growth plan in line with U.S. priorities and target segments.
  • Develop and manage insurance carrier relationships specific to SC/PRI, including an understanding of market appetite, pricing, and wordings.
  • Lead bespoke broking on complex placements and participate in large account reviews and client strategy meetings.
  • Support team excellence by coaching colleagues on product knowledge, execution, file quality, and client communication.
  • Take ownership of key financial and operational metrics (revenue, pipeline, file completeness, workplan adherence, audit readiness).
  • Communicate effectively with team members and all internal and external constituents.
  • Travel to clients, colleagues, and insurers across the U.S. (and occasionally internationally) for meetings, negotiations, and reviews.
How this opportunity is different

This is a critical role at the center of Aon’s U.S. Structured Credit & Political Risk practice. You will manage a portfolio of critical clients and help shape how we originate, structure, and execute our business and set operational standards. You will work alongside a highly skilled, collaborative team to grow a marketleading practice that is tightly connected to Aon’s broader Property & Casualty and sector businesses.

Skills and experience that will lead to success
  • Minimum 7 years working with Credit and/or Political Risk placements.
  • Demonstrable record of being a ‘Highly Engaged Leader' at Aon or similar organization.
  • Growth-oriented and collaborative contributor.
  • Proven operational discipline: able to run complex placements and renewals end to end with clean, audit ready files.
  • Solid Carrier Relations in the Trade Credit, Structured Credit and Political Risk Market.
  • Comfort learning and using new systems and applications.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and apply data and analytics.
  • Promote innovation in broking strategies.
  • Experience handling difficult client conversations.
  • Current insurance license or ability to quickly acquire insurance producer's license in all applicable states.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline or equivalent years of proven experience.
