POSITION SUMMARY Under limited supervision of the administrative captain and/or command staff members, the Crime and Data Analyst develops, analyzes, and maintains systems to extract data from law enforcement reports, crime reports, traffic records, files, and a variety of other sources to ensure accurate and up-to-date statistical data. WHAT YOU WILL DO Collects, collates, analyzes, reports, and disseminates information/data concerning crime trends and other external forces of information concerning internal mechanisms of the agency; analyzes tactical activities and contributes to intervention efforts as well as supports the investigative functions of the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office; uses confidential access to information concerning law enforcement calls for service, crime reports, cases, arrest records, field interviews, citations, known offender files, and other internal law enforcement data resources to identify, analyze, and resolve criminal activity. Develops the capability to internally measure and forecast long-term public safety; analyzes activity for the purpose of contributing to problem solving, intervention, and reduction efforts; researches, compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data from a variety of sources, including offense and arrest reports, census, economic and demographic reports, and related data; researches, evaluates, and identifies unusual crime activities and community conditions to assist in resource allocation including, but not limited to, patrol scheduling and beat configuration to match demands more effectively and efficiently and reduce or eliminate recurring problems; assists in community and problem-oriented policing activities; creates crime maps and charts.
Supports specific law enforcement activities by providing information and analysis to confidential data and provides decision-supporting intelligence and information which improves law enforcement awareness and judgment in a timely and reliable manner; uses unrestricted access to information concerning law enforcement activity logs, surveillance logs, intelligence files, criminal histories, response plans, emergency operations directive, and other internal law enforcement data resources. Supports general law enforcement activities by providing information and analysis on law enforcement resources, including but not limited to; redistricting, manpower, and resource allocation; requests of a political nature; plans, organizes, and/or conducts reviews and studies on crime, traffic, budget, grant administration, geographic information, and population/ demographic statistics; develops automated, regular bulletins, and information reports that will handle most routine requests for service; keeps Sheriff personnel informed of potential and actual hazards, crime statistics, patterns, and series through weekly crime bulletins, special reports, graphs, maps, and memoranda; initiates correspondence and memorandum relative to operational and administrative activities; develops and maintains programs which will collect, collate, analyze, and disseminate crime activity data, including frequency, geographic factors, victims, targets, suspect descriptors, chronological information, suspect vehicle descriptions, modus operandi factors, potential and actual law enforcement hazards, and physical evidence information. Attends meetings with representatives from other municipalities, county, and state agencies to include data collaboration and inter-agency cooperation; maintains organization ties to local and national crime analysis associations including, but not limited to, International Association of Crime Analysts, Colorado Crime Analysts Association, crime mapping, and crime analysis related list servers.
Presents information to roll calls, briefings, command staff, and public/community forums; provides crime analysis training and presentations to law enforcement and interpersonnel, outside professional groups, and other agencies/individuals/groups visiting the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office. Provides information and maintains liaison among law enforcement agencies and other county personnel and the public regarding crime and criminal activities; provides information to the Sheriff and Board of County Commissioners for decision-making purposes, presents analysis, and statistics in various internal and external forums. Applies Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to prepare and display crime and other related data in support of investigative, management, and administrative tasks; maintains up-to-date and proficiency in requisite GIS and Crime Analysis methods, tools, and procedures; uses all available resources, including Geographic Information Systems, to identify crime; documents crime clusters and defines "hot spots".
WHAT YOU HAVE Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver's license. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of criminal justice, business management, public administration, social science, behavioral science, computer science, or related field is required. (Any acceptable combination of related education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered as a substitution.) Two years of experience in research analysis and statistics of criminal trend data is required
A certificate in crime analysis and/or intelligence analysis obtained through the International Association of Crime Analysts is required upon hire. The selection process includes, but is not limited to, an interview. Prior to employment, candidates will complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen.
