Job description

The deadline to apply to this requisition is Saturday, September 12, 2026.
By applying to this requisition, you are applying to take the State Police Cadet Entrance Exam on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
Upon initial appointment, State Police Cadets must successfully complete a four-week orientation and training program at the State Police Academy in order to qualify for assignment to a State Police station or work unit. Thereafter, Cadets become part of an assignment rotation throughout the stations and units of the Department of State Police. Within their assignments, Cadets must perform duties and fulfill responsibilities including, but not limited exclusively to, the following -
1. Observe and assist sworn personnel with station-level dispatch communications.
2. Observe and assist sworn personnel in performing administrative tasks such as writing letters and memoranda, photocopying, filing, and processing mail within State Police stations or work units.
3. Observe and engage in direct, non-sworn law enforcement support activities such as providing assistance to sworn members in the field, at stations, and in command posts during public safety emergencies, community outreach initiatives or special events.
4. Undergo on-the-job training to become oriented to the work performed in assigned State Police specialty units.
5. Participate in regular physical fitness and health maintenance training in keeping with established standards for State Police Cadets.
6. Attend meetings and perform all related work as requested.
Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
  • Be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent academic credential issued by the MA Department of Education or a comparable governmental unit of a state or territory of the United States
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts driver's license
  • Be not less than 19 nor more than 25 years of age on the last date to apply for this State Police Cadet examination.
  • Have fulfilled all qualifying entrance requirements for State Police Cadets as determined by the Colonel/State Police Superintendent
  • Be able to pass a mandatory pre-employment background investigation check
  • Be deemed suitable for appointment for initial enlistment as a uniformed member of the State Police pursuant to sections 10, 11, and 14 of Chapter 22C, with the exception of the physical fitness standards. A State Police Cadet shall be required to meet the mandatory physical fitness standards for appointment for initial enlistment as a uniformed member of the State Police within 12 months of the State Police Cadet's admission to the State Police Cadet Program.
  • Consent to and successfully complete a pre-employment screening that includes physical fitness activities
