What we're looking for: A motivated and collaborative individual to join the New Braunfels Police Department. You will help serve the current and future needs of the New Braunfels community through a new initiative designed to strengthen patrol support services while creating a local pipeline into law enforcement careers. Under general supervision, the Police Service Assistant performs a variety of duties that support patrol and operational functions, including traffic incident management, motorist assistance, abandoned property handling, and field support for calls for service.

The position provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to police operations for individuals interested in a future career in public safety, specifically recent graduates of high school and college Criminal Justice programs, before pursuing peace officer certification. This position requires regular interaction with the public and close coordination with law enforcement, fire, EMS, and towing services to ensure roadway safety and efficient incident response.

The responsibilities you'll be trusted with:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all team members in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Provide motorist assistance and traffic incident management services during assigned shifts.
• Impound abandoned vehicles and property in accordance with established procedures, ensuring proper placement into the property impound system and completion of all required property, transfer, and incident reports.
• Conduct scheduled trips to deliver and retrieve paperwork, transport vehicles and equipment for deployment or repair, and follow up on vehicle or project status to minimize service disruptions.
• The Chief of Police has designated the following call types as authorized incidents for response by a PSA. PSAs shall not be dispatched to calls where there are indications a suspect may be on scene:
  • Abandoned vehicle;
  • Assist Fire Department;
  • Assist motorist;
  • Burglary report (attempted, residential, apartment, commercial, garage, vehicle and other);
  • City Ordinance Violations;
  • Criminal Mischief Report;
  • Fireworks;
  • Found property (excluding firearms and drugs);
  • Graffiti;
  • Lost property;
  • Major traffic crashes (assisting in traffic control and gathering of party/witness information);
  • Minor traffic crashes;
  • Missing person/lost child (assisting in search only);
  • Motor vehicle theft report (attempted, vehicle, trailers and others);
  • Parking violation;
  • Theft report;
  • Traffic Control; and
  • Other assignments as directed by a supervisor
• Communicate clear and accurate information using standard protocols via radio, telephone, CAD, and email with law enforcement, fire, EMS, and towing services.
• Provide comprehensive traffic incident services, including removal of laneblocking hazards, coordination and assistance with emergency and support responders, and implementation of traffic control and scene protection measures using cones, flares, signs, flagging, and emergency lighting.
• Provide basic first aid in accordance with established procedures until trained emergency responders arrive.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role:

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a career as a Police Officer with the New Braunfels Police Department and meet all applicable eligibility requirements.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

• Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver License with an acceptable driving record
• Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screenings, including a background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, drug testing, physical examination, and driving record review

Required Knowledge of:

• City ordinances, the penal code, traffic laws, and departmental policies, or the ability to learn and apply them
• Laws, policies, and procedures, and the ability to read, interpret, and apply them appropriately
• Defensive tactics and techniques, or the ability to obtain such knowledge through training
• Operation of specialized equipment, including ticket writers, pepper spray, road flares, portable police radios, bodyworn cameras (BWC), and body armor
• Principles and practices of accurate recordkeeping and data/inventory management

Required Skill in:

• Operating a twoway radio, or the ability to successfully complete required training
• Effective verbal and written communication with team members and the public
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Accurately record, organize, and maintain data and inventory
• Produce legible written entries and input data into records management systems
• Operating motor vehicles and office equipment, including computers, telephones, and copy machines
• Ability to receive, understand, and act upon detailed verbal information

Your work environment:

• Work is performed in a standard office environment and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; includes ability to stand and sit for long periods while maintaining alertness and rapid response; is subject to sitting, standing, bending and reaching for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to safely lift, drag and/or carry fifty (50) pounds continuously and up to one hundred (100) pounds occasionally with assistance.
• Must be able to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods of time, possibly in less than ideal weather conditions.
• Must be able to safely operate a pickup truck while towing a 20-30foot trailer and physically access the underside of vehicles as required for inspections or incident response.
• Must be available to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to pass departmental entry fitness exam and maintain a level of physical fitness consistent with departmental standards.
• May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
• NOTE: This position is designated safety and/or security sensitive.

Additional Information:

This is not a peace officer position; however, the incumbent must be comfortable working alongside police officers and supporting overall public safety operations. The role may involve exposure to traumatic scenes, situations, and environments. Scheduling flexibility is required to meet operational needs and may include days, evenings, weekends, and shortnotice callouts for special events. Work hours and assigned days off may change in the future based on program success and the needs of the City of New Braunfels.
