Job description

School Crossing Guard (Part-Time) The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia, and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington, and Fairfax counties. With a population of approximately 150,000 and a land area of 15.75 square miles, Alexandria is the seventh largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Alexandria has a charming waterfront and is a unique and historic place to live and work

About one-quarter of the City's square miles have been designated as a national or local historic district. We proudly embrace our rich history and seize the endless opportunities that lie ahead. An Overview The Alexandria Police Department is looking for a few qualified individuals for a rewarding part time opportunity to connect with the community and provide safety to our smallest citizens. This is a great opportunity for individuals with flexible schedules including students, the stay-at-home parent and retirees. Each applicant should work well with children.

To be a member of this dedicated team, one must be willing and able to work in all types of inclement weather conditions and have reliable transportation. The position requires some flexibility because periodically there may be a need to respond to emergency schedule changes. The crossing guard must be open and available to work any assigned school post.

What You Should Bring The ideal candidate should have the willingness to work in adverse conditions, such as rain, heat and cold. A candidate should be able to understand and apply the rules of the road while crossing pedestrians through intersections and at crosswalks. This will also require the candidate to stand on his or her feet for the entire duration of the assigned post.

The candidate should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and be courteous with colleagues and the public. The Opportunity - Examples of Work Controls and directs traffic at crossings to allow children to cross safely Instructs children in the safe and correct way to cross streets and in ways to identify a potential traffic hazard Maintains discipline of children, ensuring conformance with traffic and crossing regulations Learns the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas Reports unsafe behavior of children to school officials Gives school children and other persons directions and information Report traffic signals out of order, accidents, traffic violations and other hazardous conditions Uniforms clean and neat with all necessary issued equipment to accommodate weather Use hand and whistle signals to coordinate traffic flow. Perform related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience working with children; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Preferred Qualifications Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to report to assigned school crossing posts on time and maintain a dependable work schedule.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, motorists, and members of the public. Ability to exercise mature, alert, and sound judgment in a variety of traffic, pedestrian, and weather conditions. Ability to be firm and attentive while remaining tactful, courteous, and respectful.

Ability to communicate effectively with school-aged children and the public. Some knowledge of traffic laws, pedestrian safety practices, and school-zone safety procedures. Experience working with children, school-aged pedestrians, or the general public.

Prior experience in traffic control, school operations, public safety, or customer service. Notes Due to the confidential needs of this position, it requires the successful completion of pre- employment background checks. This includes the following: Drug Screen, Criminal Background Checks (Local and Federal).

Criminal Justice Information Services Security Awareness Training and Annual Recertification. This position will have a MAXIMUM of 15 hours per week Monday-Friday and hours will vary by school. The School Crossing Guard position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with the Labor and Trades CBA.
