Position Summary
The Campus Police Officer performs a full range of sworn law enforcement duties to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Officers provide proactive patrol, emergency response, crime prevention, investigations, and community-oriented policing services while enforcing federal, state, and local laws, as well as college policies and regulations. This position requires sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and the ability to respond effectively to routine incidents and critical emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patrol campus buildings, parking lots, and surrounding college property on foot and by vehicle to deter criminal activity, protect life and property, and maintain a visible law enforcement presence.
Respond promptly to calls for service, emergencies, alarms, suspicious activity, criminal complaints, accidents, medical emergencies, fires, hazardous incidents, and natural disasters.
Investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents, traffic collisions, property damage, and complaints; collect evidence, interview victims and witnesses, document findings, and complete thorough incident and offense reports.
Enforce federal, state, and local laws, campus policies, parking regulations, and traffic laws.
Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations and coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies when appropriate.
Apprehend offenders, make lawful arrests, and use the appropriate level of force consistent with departmental policy and Georgia law.
Provide first aid, CPR, and emergency medical assistance until relieved by emergency medical personnel.
Serve as the initial law enforcement response during active shooter incidents, violent crimes, fire emergencies, severe weather events, hazardous material incidents, and other critical emergencies.
Monitor campus security through physical patrols, surveillance systems, and regular inspections of buildings, doors, windows, gates, and grounds.
Lock and unlock campus facilities and ensure buildings are properly secured after operating hours.
Perform dispatch-related duties, maintain radio communications, and coordinate emergency responses with public safety agencies.
Direct traffic, provide crowd control, and maintain security during campus events and special activities.
Escort students, employees, and visitors when necessary and provide general assistance to members of the campus community.
Prepare accurate reports using the department's Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS/ARMS).
Maintain compliance with the Federal Clery Act by accurately documenting and submitting required crime reports within established timelines.
Respond appropriately to Title IX-related incidents and assist with investigations in accordance with applicable laws and institutional policies.
Coordinate disaster preparedness, emergency response, evacuation procedures, shelter operations, and recovery efforts as directed.
Inspect equipment, emergency systems, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.
Promote crime prevention, campus safety awareness, and positive community relations through education and proactive engagement.
Resolve conflicts through communication, de-escalation, and sound judgment while treating all individuals with dignity, fairness, empathy, and respect.
Testify in criminal, civil, administrative, or college disciplinary proceedings as required.
Maintain required certifications, departmental training, and professional standards.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification in good standing.
Minimum of two (2) years of active law enforcement patrol experience.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
No active POST probation, suspension, or pending disciplinary investigations.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree or higher in Criminal Justice or a related field.
Previous campus law enforcement, community policing, or higher education public safety experience.
Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Incident Command System (ICS/NIMS).
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
Stand and walk for extended periods indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Run in response to emergencies.
Climb and descend stairs and navigate uneven terrain.
Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40 pounds.
Perform CPR and emergency medical assistance.
Physically restrain or arrest individuals when necessary.
Operate patrol vehicles and other law enforcement equipment.
Differentiate between colors and maintain visual acuity sufficient for law enforcement duties.
Work Environment
This position might require rotating shifts at times, including days and/or evenings, as needed. Officers may be exposed to hazardous conditions, violent situations, inclement weather, infectious diseases, and other risks associated with law enforcement.
