Pole Loading Software Review information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pole Loading Software Reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pole Loading Software Reviewer, you need a solid understanding of structural engineering principles, utility pole design, and relevant industry standards, often backed by an engineering degree or related experience. Familiarity with specialized pole loading analysis software (such as O-Calc Pro, SPIDAcalc, or PoleForeman) and knowledge of NESC or GO95 codes is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for evaluating software accuracy and conveying findings. Mastery of these skills ensures reliable assessments, regulatory compliance, and informed recommendations to support safe and efficient utility infrastructure.

What is pole loading software review?

A pole loading software review is the process of evaluating specialized software tools used to calculate the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of utility poles. These reviews help utilities, engineers, and telecom companies select the right software for designing, analyzing, and managing overhead infrastructure. The review typically assesses features such as compliance with industry standards, ease of use, reporting capabilities, and integration with GIS or other systems. By thoroughly reviewing pole loading software, organizations can ensure safe and efficient pole installations that meet regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Pole Loading Software Review vs Line Design Technician?

AspectPole Loading Software ReviewLine Design Technician
CredentialsKnowledge of engineering software, technical skillsTechnical diploma or degree, engineering knowledge
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, software analysisFieldwork, site visits, design planning
Industry UsageUtility companies, engineering firmsUtility companies, telecom providers

While Pole Loading Software Review focuses on evaluating software tools used to analyze pole capacity, Line Design Technicians are involved in creating and implementing physical line layouts. Both roles require technical knowledge, but one emphasizes software analysis, and the other emphasizes field and design work.

What are some typical challenges faced when reviewing pole loading software, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in reviewing pole loading software is ensuring that the platform accurately models real-world conditions and complies with relevant engineering standards. Reviewers often need to validate that calculations for structural loads, clearances, and environmental factors are both comprehensive and user-friendly. Collaborating closely with engineering teams and field technicians can help in identifying gaps or usability issues. Additionally, staying updated on regulatory changes and best practices in utility design supports more thorough and effective software evaluations.

Job description

We are seeking a Distribution Design Engineer to join our growing team supporting overhead and underground utility distribution projects (34kV and below). This role offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects that directly impact power delivery and community infrastructure.
You will be involved in the full design lifecycle-from initial field assessments through construction support-while collaborating closely with utility clients, internal design teams, and field personnel. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on design work, problem-solving, and seeing projects come to life in the field.
Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering and design for overhead and underground utility distribution systems (34kV and below)
  • Develop distribution line designs using client-specific standards, processes, and network design software
  • Manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with internal teams and interface directly with utility clients to ensure project alignment and success
  • Prepare complete construction packages for overhead and underground distribution projects
  • Utilize GIS data and mapping tools to support design development and accuracy
  • Conduct field walkdowns to validate existing conditions and inform design decisions
  • Respond to field questions during construction and provide technical support as needed
  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers, surveyors, and construction personnel throughout the project lifecycle
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members

Typical Project Assignments
  • Overhead and underground distribution design for new and rebuild line projects
  • Pole replacements and system upgrades
  • Grid automation and system modernization efforts
  • New customer service interconnections
  • Underground cable replacements and cable vault design
  • Joint-use coordination and design
  • Preparation of design calculations and material selection in accordance with client standards
  • GIS mapping and system documentation

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering
  • 3-7 years of experience in utility distribution engineering or related field
  • Familiarity with overhead and underground distribution design practices
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and with clients
  • Experience with GIS tools and design software is preferred
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future

What The Role Offers
  • Exposure to a diverse mix of utility distribution projects
  • Hands-on experience across design, fieldwork, and construction support
  • A collaborative environment with opportunities to learn from experienced engineers and grow your career
  • The ability to contribute to critical infrastructure that powers communities

$40,000 - $120,000 a year
