What is a poker player?

Poker players are individuals who participate in the card game of poker, either professionally or recreationally. Their main objective is to win chips or money by forming the best possible hand or by strategically convincing other players to fold. Professional poker players often compete in live tournaments or online games and rely on a combination of skill, psychology, mathematics, and luck. Many dedicate significant time to studying game theory and honing their techniques to improve their chances of winning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a poker player, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Poker Player, you need strong mathematical skills, strategic thinking, and deep knowledge of game theory and poker rules, often developed through study and experience rather than formal qualifications. Familiarity with online poker platforms, tracking software, and hand analysis tools is also essential. Emotional control, discipline, and keen observational abilities help players excel in high-pressure, competitive environments. These skills are crucial for making optimal decisions, reading opponents, and maintaining consistent performance over time.

What are common challenges poker players face when managing their work-life balance?

Professional poker players often encounter challenges in maintaining a healthy work-life balance due to the irregular hours, extensive travel, and mental demands associated with tournaments and online play. The need for constant focus, study, and adaptation to new strategies can lead to long working hours and potential burnout. Many players find it helpful to set structured schedules, incorporate regular breaks, and prioritize physical and mental health to sustain long-term success in the field.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Affiliate Manager - Poker based in Netherlands.

This is an exciting opportunity to drive affiliate growth within the online poker industry across a key regional market.
You will own the development of a poker affiliate portfolio, from identifying and closing new partnerships to maximising the commercial performance of existing relationships.
The role combines business development, partner management, commercial negotiation, and data-driven performance optimisation.
You will work with affiliates and poker communities to attract players whose volume, quality, and longevity generate sustainable value.
A strong understanding of poker player economics, rakeback structures, and acquisition models will be central to your success.
You will have significant autonomy to shape deals, build a regional pipeline, and make informed decisions about scaling or renegotiating partnerships.
This is a high-impact role for a commercially minded affiliate professional who understands both poker and the dynamics of long-term player acquisition.

Accountabilities
  • Source, develop, negotiate, and close new poker affiliate partnerships across the region, using CPA, revenue share, rakeback-based, and hybrid commercial models within agreed guidelines.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of prospective affiliate partners across the regional poker and community landscape.
  • Structure commercial agreements with a clear understanding of poker player economics, balancing acquisition costs and rakeback against player volume, longevity, and net contribution.
  • Manage the existing regional affiliate portfolio as the primary day-to-day contact, strengthening relationships while maintaining a strong focus on commercial performance.
  • Monitor deal-level and cohort-level performance, including traffic quality, rake generation, player longevity, and overall partner profitability.
  • Identify underperforming or low-quality traffic sources and take timely action through optimisation, renegotiation, or termination of agreements.
  • Use performance data to assess partner quality and make commercially sound decisions regarding investment and deal structures.
  • Maintain accurate records of partners, commercial terms, performance, and payment schedules.
  • Report regularly on newly closed deals, pipeline development, portfolio performance, risks, and growth opportunities.
  • Escalate commercial terms that fall outside established guidelines while exercising strong independent judgment in day-to-day negotiations.
Requirements
  • Proven track record of sourcing and closing poker affiliate partnerships, with measurable acquisition and rake results and the ability to explain the commercial decisions behind them.
  • Strong understanding of online poker and poker player economics, including rakeback structures, player segments, acquisition costs, and factors that influence long-term player value.
  • Established relationships within the regional poker affiliate, publisher, and community ecosystem, or a demonstrated ability to build a relevant network quickly.
  • Hands-on experience negotiating and managing CPA, revenue share, rakeback-based, and hybrid affiliate arrangements.
  • Demonstrated experience analysing cohort quality, rake generation, player longevity, traffic performance, and partner profitability.
  • Strong negotiation and commercial judgment, with the ability to operate within agreed commercial guardrails and recognise when escalation is required.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple affiliate relationships, commercial priorities, and administrative requirements independently.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a proactive and results-oriented approach.
  • Comfortable working as an independent contributor in a fast-moving, international environment.
  • Direct professional experience within the online poker industry is highly valuable.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
  • Fully remote working arrangement with flexible working hours.
  • Opportunity to work at the intersection of online poker, gaming, blockchain technology, and digital marketing.
  • Collaborative and inclusive international team culture.
  • Professional development opportunities and potential for career growth.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership over regional affiliate growth and commercial strategy.
  • Opportunity to build and influence a growing poker affiliate portfolio in a dynamic market.
  • Exposure to a rapidly evolving online gaming environment and experienced professionals across international markets.
