What is a PMP project manager contract?

A PMP Project Manager Contract job is a temporary role where a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) oversees projects for a specific duration. These managers ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget using industry-standard methodologies. Contract positions may vary in length and are often found in industries like IT, construction, healthcare, and finance.

What are some common challenges faced by PMP project manager contract professionals, and how are they typically addressed?

PMP Project Manager Contract professionals often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new organizational cultures, managing teams across multiple departments or locations, and aligning stakeholder expectations within tight project timelines. To address these, successful contractors leverage standardized project management frameworks, maintain open and proactive communication, and use proven risk management strategies. It is also important to establish clear project goals and deliverables early on, ensuring alignment with all key stakeholders. Navigating these challenges effectively not only ensures project success but also helps build a reputation for reliability and adaptability in contract-based roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the PMP project manager contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PMP Project Manager Contract, you need strong project management skills, a deep understanding of project lifecycles, and a PMP certification to validate your expertise. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project, Jira, or Asana, and proficiency in budgeting and scheduling tools are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and navigate stakeholder expectations. These competencies are critical for ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the satisfaction of all parties involved.

How much do PMP project managers make?

PMP project managers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Certified project managers with strong leadership skills and proficiency in project management tools often command higher salaries, especially in large organizations or complex projects.

Is PMP still in demand?

At GT Independence, people are at the heart of everything we do. If you thrive in a collaborative environment, love what you do, and are eager to grow, you’re in the right place. Discover a career where your work genuinely improves lives and supports a mission that matters.

Our Mission

To help people live a life of their choosing, regardless of age or ability.

GT Independence has earned multiple awards for being an exceptional workplace, including being named a 2026 National “Best and Brightest Companies to Work For.” We are also proudly certified as a Great Place to Work® for 2025/2026—a distinction reserved for top employers committed to outstanding employee experiences.

The Project Manager leads strategic and operational projects that drive efficiency, support organizational growth, and deliver measurable outcomes. Reporting to the Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office, this role owns the full project lifecycle—applying PMI-aligned methodologies to plan, execute, monitor, and close cross-functional projects that span operations, technology, compliance, and new business implementation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead cross-functional projects from initiation through closure, following established EPMO protocols and PMI-aligned methodologies (waterfall, agile, hybrid).
  • Develop and maintain project charters, schedules, risk logs, CRAIDD logs, communication plans, and other required documentation.
  • Ensure project scope, timeline, budget, and quality remain aligned with strategic objectives and stakeholder expectations.
  • Facilitate project meetings, status reporting, risk/issue management, and decision tracking.

Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Coordinate with executive sponsors, subject-matter experts, operations, IT, finance, compliance, and external partners to ensure deliverables are completed on time and on budget.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations through proactive, transparent communication.
  • Serve as a trusted partner to Directors of Operations, Product Owners, and Implementation leads throughout the delivery lifecycle.

New Business Implementation

  • Support new state and contract launches by managing readiness activities, training coordination, vendor integration, and go-live execution.
  • Partner with the Implementation function to ensure smooth handoff of projects into operations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and champion process improvements through change requests and standardized SOPs.
  • Contribute to the maturity of EPMO templates, tools, and playbooks (Monday.com, Smartsheet, Microsoft Planner/Project, SharePoint).
  • Escalate high-impact opportunities and risks through appropriate governance channels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations, Healthcare Administration, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5–8 years of progressive project management experience leading complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong working knowledge of PMI's PMBOK-based methodology; PMP certification strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated capability across multiple delivery methods (waterfall, agile, hybrid).
  • Proficiency with project management platforms such as Monday.com, Smartsheet, Microsoft Planner, Microsoft Project, or Jira.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and executive-level communication skills.
  • Proven ability to influence without formal authority and work effectively across all levels of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a private equity–backed, high-growth, or transformation-oriented environment.
  • Experience in healthcare, Medicaid, HCBS/self-direction, financial management services, payroll, or a similarly regulated services industry.
  • Experience supporting RFP responses, new business implementations, or multi-state operational rollouts.
  • Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement certification.

Success Measures in the First 12 Months

  • Consistent on-time, on-budget project delivery across an assigned portfolio.
  • High stakeholder satisfaction scores at project close.
  • Timely and complete project documentation, communications, and status reporting.
  • Meaningful contributions to EPMO standards, templates, and continuous improvement initiatives.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Position is hybrid; with office locations in Sturgis, MI, Southington, CT, Silver Spring, MD, High Point, NC, and Salem, OR, with remote candidates considered based on qualifications and travel flexibility. Occasional travel to state operations, sponsor meetings, and consulting partner sessions expected.
