How much do plumbing license jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for plumbing license in the United States is $30.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.80 and $34.86 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a plumbing license and why is it important?

A plumbing license is an official certification granted by a state or local authority that allows an individual to legally perform plumbing work. It demonstrates that the plumber has met specific training, experience, and examination requirements to ensure public safety and compliance with building codes. Having a plumbing license helps protect consumers from unqualified work and ensures that plumbing systems are installed and repaired safely and effectively. Most states require plumbers to be licensed to work on residential and commercial projects, and unlicensed work may result in fines or legal consequences.

What are some common challenges plumbers face when working toward obtaining their plumbing license?

Aspiring plumbers often encounter challenges such as meeting state-specific educational and apprenticeship requirements, passing rigorous licensing exams, and staying updated with evolving plumbing codes and safety regulations. Balancing on-the-job training with classroom instruction can also be demanding, especially for those working full-time. However, successfully navigating these challenges not only leads to licensure but also opens doors to higher-paying jobs, greater job security, and potential advancement into supervisory or business owner roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a licensed plumber, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Licensed Plumber, you need a solid understanding of plumbing systems, building codes, and troubleshooting, typically backed by an apprenticeship and a state-issued plumbing license. Familiarity with specialized tools, pipefitting equipment, and blueprint reading is essential, along with knowledge of safety protocols. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help plumbers manage projects and work with clients. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, code-compliant installations and repairs, leading to customer satisfaction and professional credibility.

What is the difference between Plumbing License vs Plumbing Apprentice?

AspectPlumbing LicensePlumbing Apprentice
Required CredentialsState-specific licensing exam, work experience, and possibly a license applicationOn-the-job training, supervised by licensed plumbers, no license required
Work EnvironmentSupervises projects, performs complex plumbing tasks, inspects workAssists licensed plumbers, learns trade skills, performs basic tasks
Industry UsageLicensed professionals authorized to perform and oversee plumbing workEntry-level trainees gaining experience in plumbing trade

The main difference between a Plumbing License and a Plumbing Apprentice is that a licensed plumber has met all certification requirements and can independently perform plumbing work, while an apprentice is in training, working under supervision to gain necessary skills and experience.

Is it hard to get hired as a plumbing license?

Obtaining a plumbing license involves completing required training, apprenticeships, and passing licensing exams, which can be challenging but are designed to ensure competency. Employers often seek licensed plumbers with practical skills, certifications, and experience working with plumbing systems and tools. The difficulty of getting hired depends on the local job market and the individual's qualifications and training level.
