What is a plumbers apprentice?

Plumbers apprentices are individuals who are training to become licensed plumbers by working under the supervision of experienced plumbers. They learn through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction, gaining hands-on experience with installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems. Apprenticeships typically last 4 to 5 years and help apprentices develop the skills and knowledge required to become journeyman plumbers. This pathway provides a structured way to enter the plumbing trade and earn while learning.

How much do plumber apprentices make a week?

Plumber apprentices typically earn between $300 and $600 per week, depending on experience, location, and the stage of their apprenticeship. As they gain skills and certifications, their wages generally increase, and they often work full-time hours in construction or maintenance environments.

Is it hard to get a plumber apprenticeship?

Getting a plumber apprenticeship can be competitive, as it often requires a high school diploma or equivalent, basic math skills, and a willingness to learn on the job. Applicants typically need to pass an interview and may need to obtain relevant certifications or licenses during the program. Persistence and a strong interest in plumbing skills improve chances of securing an apprenticeship.

Is a plumbing apprentice worth it?

A plumbing apprentice position provides hands-on training, skill development, and industry experience, which can lead to a licensed plumber career. Apprenticeships often include earning while learning and gaining certifications, making them a valuable step for those entering the plumbing trade.

What is the difference between Plumbers Apprentice vs Plumber?

AspectPlumbers ApprenticePlumber
CredentialsOn-the-job training, some states require licensing or certificationCompleted apprenticeship, licensing or certification often required
Work EnvironmentLearning phase, assisting experienced plumbers, supervised workPerforming installations, repairs, and maintenance independently
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with tasks, learning trade skills, gaining experienceExecuting plumbing tasks, troubleshooting, and project management

The main difference between a Plumbers Apprentice and a Plumber is experience and responsibility level. Apprentices are in training, assisting with tasks under supervision, while Plumbers are fully qualified professionals capable of working independently. Apprenticeship programs help develop skills needed to become a licensed Plumber, who can then handle a wider range of plumbing projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a plumbers apprentice during their first year on the job?

In their first year, Plumbers Apprentices often face challenges such as adapting to physically demanding work, learning to use a variety of tools safely, and understanding complex plumbing systems. They may also need to adjust to early start times and working in various environments, from residential homes to construction sites. Additionally, balancing on-the-job training with classroom instruction can be demanding, but support from experienced plumbers and supervisors helps apprentices build their skills and confidence over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plumbers apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plumbers Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of plumbing systems, good manual dexterity, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with plumbing tools, pipe cutters, augers, and safety equipment is essential, and some regions require enrollment in an apprenticeship program. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn help apprentices stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient installations and repairs while building a foundation for a successful plumbing career.

Job description

Service Plumber — Grow Into Your Own Van | Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Eastern Essex (Nutley, NJ)

Tired of being just another hand on someone else's crew with no clear path forward? We're hiring a service plumber who wants more — and we're going to give you a runway to get there.

You'll start as the right hand to our Lead Plumber, running calls together in our first van. You'll learn how we run the business — our customer experience, our pricing, our equipment, our process — backed by Mr. Rooter / Neighborly's national systems and training. When you're ready, you take the keys to our second van and become the lead on your own route.

The path is real. Our growth plan calls for a second van within the first year of operation. We're not dangling a vague promise — we're hiring you with that next step in mind.

Day-one work: Two-person calls and solo calls on residential and light commercial service — drain cleaning, sewer repair and replacement, water heaters, and general service plumbing across Essex County. You'll learn our systems, our customers, and our standards alongside the Lead.

Future-state work (Van #2): Run your own route. Be the face of Mr. Rooter to your customers - and earn more pay to take home.

What makes this different:

  • Guaranteed base salary from day one — you're not waiting on call volume to get paid.
  • Profit sharing — when the business wins, you win.
  • Commission opportunities when you move to Van #2 — your own route, your own performance, your own upside.
  • Real mentorship — you learn under an experienced lead, not by watching YouTube on lunch breaks.
  • National brand behind you — Mr. Rooter / Neighborly training, systems, and name recognition.

Who we're looking for: Plumbing experience is what we care about most — at any stage of your career. NJ Journeyman license is ideal, Master is welcome, apprentices working toward licensure are encouraged to apply, and experienced plumbers without a current license should still apply and tell us your story. Hungry to grow, not afraid of hard work, and ready to learn how a business runs from the inside. Valid driver's license with an insurable record. Comfort with tablet-based invoicing and dispatch. Pride in clean, careful, customer-respecting work. Our motto: Not the cheapest. The best.

Pay: $55,000–$95,000+ depending on license and experience, plus profit sharing. Commissions available when you move to Van #2.

If you're ready to grow into your own van — apply, and let's talk.
