Position Summary

The Estimating Manager will lead the estimating department for large-scale mechanical and plumbing construction projects. This role is responsible for managing estimating personnel, overseeing bid strategies, preparing detailed project estimates, and collaborating with operations, purchasing, finance, and executive leadership to support successful project pursuits.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating Leadership

• Lead and manage all estimating department activities.

• Assign priorities and coordinate workloads among estimating staff.

• Mentor, train, and develop estimators.

• Establish bid strategies and oversee estimate preparation.

Preconstruction & Bidding

• Prepare and review detailed mechanical and plumbing estimates.

• Develop estimates from schematic, design-build, and construction documents.

• Manage negotiated and hard-bid project opportunities.

• Review project specifications, drawings, and contract requirements.

• Coordinate bid activities with project teams and regional offices.

Cost Analysis & Procurement

• Perform quantity takeoffs and labor calculations.

• Develop pricing strategies and cost analyses.

• Prepare subcontractor scopes of work.

• Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate vendor and subcontractor pricing.

• Support subcontract award processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with Purchasing, Finance, BIM, and Operations teams.

• Support project budgeting and cost-control initiatives.

• Assist with proposal development and client presentations.

• Ensure seamless transition from estimating to project execution.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of mechanical and plumbing estimating experience.

• Experience estimating construction projects exceeding $25 million.

• Proven success with healthcare, laboratory, industrial, institutional, or data center projects.

• Strong knowledge of design-build, negotiated, and hard-bid delivery methods.

• Experience leading estimating teams and managing multiple bids simultaneously.

• Strong understanding of cost controls, labor burdens, contracts, bonding, insurance, and procurement.

• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schematic designs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working for a self-perform mechanical contractor.

• Background in HVAC, plumbing, piping, or MEP construction.

• Experience with estimating software and BIM-integrated workflows.

• Strong vendor and subcontractor negotiation skills.
