What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Plumber Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plumber Engineer, you need a solid background in plumbing systems, mechanical engineering principles, and relevant technical qualifications such as a degree in mechanical engineering or a certified plumbing license. Familiarity with CAD software, hydraulic modeling tools, and compliance with local building codes is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals excel in designing and managing complex piping systems. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant plumbing solutions for residential, commercial, or industrial projects.

What are some typical challenges a Plumber Engineer faces when working on large-scale commercial projects?

Plumber Engineers working on large commercial projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors, adapting to evolving building plans, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety and plumbing codes. Managing the installation of complex piping systems under tight deadlines can require strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, troubleshooting unforeseen issues, like unexpected obstructions or changes in project scope, is a common part of the job and demands both technical expertise and adaptability.

What are Plumber Engineers?

Plumber Engineers are professionals who design, install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They ensure that water supply, drainage, and waste systems function safely and efficiently, often working with blueprints and building codes. In addition to hands-on plumbing work, Plumber Engineers may also oversee projects, select suitable materials, and troubleshoot complex plumbing problems. Their expertise helps maintain the health, safety, and comfort of building occupants.

They are seeking a Plumbing Engineer to join their growing San Jose team. This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping projects across biotech, semiconductor, higher education, and other dynamic markets — while advancing your career in a collaborative, growth-focused environment.

What You’ll Do:
As a Plumbing Engineer, you’ll bring technical expertise and creative problem-solving to projects that make a real impact. You will:

  • Collaborate directly with customers to develop designs, calculate system requirements, and select equipment tailored to project needs

  • Take ownership as lead Engineer on assigned projects, driving designs from concept through construction

  • Design plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, compressed air, and natural gas

  • Perform hydraulic calculations (pressure loss, flow sizing, pump selection) to ensure system efficiency

  • Ensure all designs meet applicable codes and standards (UPC, CPC, NFPA, ADA, and local requirements)

  • Coordinate plumbing designs with mechanical, electrical, structural, and architectural teams to deliver seamless, constructible solutions

  • Prepare specifications, equipment schedules, and technical documentation

  • Conduct site surveys and develop accurate as-built documentation

  • Support sustainability initiatives with water conservation and energy-efficient design strategies

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical support for fabrication and field operations

  • Participate in jobsite meetings and client presentations, building trusted relationships

What We’re Looking For:

  • 5+ years of plumbing design experience (commercial or industrial projects)

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, or related discipline

  • Strong knowledge of plumbing codes, standards, and best practices (UPC, CPC, NFPA, ASPE guidelines, ADA)

  • Experience preparing plumbing drawings, specifications, and hydraulic calculations

  • Familiarity with system types including domestic water, sanitary, storm, lab/medical gases, and specialty piping

  • Proven ability to manage projects, lead teams, and deliver quality work on time

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and REVIT; BIM coordination experience preferred

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and client-facing skills

  • EIT or PE license (CA) preferred, or the ability to obtain

Why Join:

  • Competitive compensation package with growth potential

  • Comprehensive healthcare and retirement benefits

  • Paid vacation, sick time, and holidays

  • Relocation assistance available for the right candidate

  • Be part of a team that values innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence

  • Opportunity to work on high-profile, diverse projects that challenge and develop your skills
