What is a plugin developer?

Plugin developers are software professionals who design, create, and maintain plugins—small software components that add specific features or functionalities to existing applications or platforms. They work with various systems such as web browsers, content management systems (like WordPress), or software frameworks to extend their capabilities. Plugin developers need strong programming skills, knowledge of the target platform’s architecture, and an understanding of how to ensure compatibility and security. Their work enables users to customize and enhance software without altering the core codebase.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plugin developer?

To thrive as a Plugin Developer, you need strong programming skills (commonly in languages like JavaScript, PHP, or Python), experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid understanding of the host platform’s architecture. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), API integrations, and knowledge of software development best practices or certifications such as AWS Certified Developer can be advantageous. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help distinguish top-performing plugin developers. These skills ensure plugins are efficient, secure, user-friendly, and compatible, directly impacting user experience and platform functionality.

What are the common challenges faced by plugin developers when ensuring compatibility with different software versions?

Plugin developers often encounter challenges in maintaining compatibility across multiple software versions due to frequent updates and changes in the host application's API or architecture. It requires staying up-to-date with release notes, testing plugins against new versions, and sometimes refactoring code to address deprecated functions or new requirements. Active communication with the user community and host application developers can help identify issues early and ensure a smoother user experience. Being proactive with version control and documentation is also crucial for managing compatibility challenges effectively.

What is the salary of a plugin developer?

The salary of a plugin developer varies based on experience, location, and skill set, but typically ranges from $60,000 to $120,000 annually. Entry-level developers may earn less, while experienced professionals with specialized skills in coding languages and platform integration can earn higher salaries.

Senior Software Engineer II, Developer Experience

Carta

San Francisco, CA

$212K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Job description

The Team You'll Work With

You'll join our Developer Experience (DevEx) team, a lean "Special Ops" unit within Carta's Infrastructure organization. Our North Star: remove friction from every step of the software delivery lifecycle so Carta's engineers can do the best work of their careers.

We own CI/CD infrastructure, GitHub governance across 500+ repos, the rollout of AI coding tools across our company, and the internal tooling layer that lets Carta move fast without breaking things. We are systems thinkers who measure everything, because you can't optimize what you don't understand.

Carta is making a company-wide bet on AI-native development, and DevEx is the team defining how that happens. Six months from now, the playbook will be written. Now is when you get to write it.

The Problems You'll Solve

As a Senior Software Engineer II on DevEx, you will:

  • Build the MCP servers, agents, and plugin infrastructure that Carta's AI native development runs on, and define the patterns other engineers follow
  • Design and ship agents purpose-built to solve specific developer problems across the software delivery lifecycle
  • Architect and drive CI/CD pipelines that automate build, test, and deployment to accelerate delivery across R&D
  • Build the infrastructure AI tooling runs on, so other engineers can build on top of it with confidence
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through code reviews and architectural guidance
About You
  • Experience: 8+ years in platform, backend, or fullstack engineering
  • AI Builder: You've shipped production LLM systems, whether that's MCP servers or clients, AI extensions, connectors, or agents designed to solve real problems, not just demos
  • Platform Mindset: You build things other engineers build on top of and think about APIs and developer ergonomics as seriously as performance
  • Tech Stack: Python or Java; CI/CD tooling (CircleCI, GitHub Actions,  ArgoCD, Jenkins, Docker); cloud-native (AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes); familiarity with secrets management tooling (Vault, Cloudsmith) is a plus
  • Security Aware: You think about least-privilege, token lifecycle, and supply chain risks when designing developer tooling, not just after an incident
  • Execution: You break down ambiguous problems and deliver with minimal guidance, bringing data to debates and owning outcomes end-to-end
Salary

Carta's compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, exceptional benefits, and, for applicable roles, commissions plans. Our minimum cash compensation (salary + commission if applicable) range for this role is:

  • $212,500 - $250,000 in Santa Clara, CA; San Francisco, CA; New York, NY

Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on geography, candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.
