What is a plugin developer?

Plugin developers are software professionals who design, create, and maintain plugins—small software components that add specific features or functionalities to existing applications or platforms. They work with various systems such as web browsers, content management systems (like WordPress), or software frameworks to extend their capabilities. Plugin developers need strong programming skills, knowledge of the target platform’s architecture, and an understanding of how to ensure compatibility and security. Their work enables users to customize and enhance software without altering the core codebase.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plugin developer?

To thrive as a Plugin Developer, you need strong programming skills (commonly in languages like JavaScript, PHP, or Python), experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid understanding of the host platform’s architecture. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), API integrations, and knowledge of software development best practices or certifications such as AWS Certified Developer can be advantageous. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help distinguish top-performing plugin developers. These skills ensure plugins are efficient, secure, user-friendly, and compatible, directly impacting user experience and platform functionality.

What are the common challenges faced by plugin developers when ensuring compatibility with different software versions?

Plugin developers often encounter challenges in maintaining compatibility across multiple software versions due to frequent updates and changes in the host application's API or architecture. It requires staying up-to-date with release notes, testing plugins against new versions, and sometimes refactoring code to address deprecated functions or new requirements. Active communication with the user community and host application developers can help identify issues early and ensure a smoother user experience. Being proactive with version control and documentation is also crucial for managing compatibility challenges effectively.

What is the salary of a plugin developer?

The salary of a plugin developer varies based on experience, location, and skill set, but typically ranges from $60,000 to $120,000 annually. Entry-level developers may earn less, while experienced professionals with specialized skills in coding languages and platform integration can earn higher salaries.

Partner Engineer - Technology Partnerships

Sonar

Job description

Who is Sonar?

Sonar is driving the future of agent-centric software development. As the leader in AI code verification and governance, we solve a critical problem: ensuring that software generated by AI-assisted developers or autonomous agents is reliable, secure, and maintainable.

Integrating seamlessly with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, and Devin, we help over 75% of the Fortune 100 build trusted, reliable, compliant software. Customers who use Sonar are 44% less likely to report an outage due to AI-generated code.

We believe code verification is the critical missing link in the Agent-Centric Development Cycle (AC/DC). Industry giants like Nvidia, ServiceNow, Booking.com, Goldman Sachs, AstraZeneca, and Ford Motor Company count on us to provide independent, explainable, consistent review and governance of their AI-generated code via products like:

  • SonarQube: The world's leading AI code review and verification platform.
  • SonarQube Foundation Agent: Currently topping the leaderboards for agentic software repair.
  • SonarSweep & Sonar Context Augmentation: Providing the enterprise-grade context and constraints agents need to be truly effective.

Our team operates across global hubs in Austin, Bochum, Dubai, Geneva, London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Washington D.C. We move with a mindset we call CODE:

  • Committed to our customers and community.
  • Obsessed with quality.
  • Deliberate in our decisions.
  • Effective as one team.

With over $400M in revenue and profitable, fast-paced growth, we are building the backbone of the AI software revolution. If you're hungry to have an impact, want to build at a fast pace, and ready to work at the forefront of AI, we want to hear from you.

Position description:

As a Partner Engineer, you will serve as a technical architect of Sonar's partner ecosystem, bridging the gap between our code quality and security solution and partner tools developers rely on every day. You will expand the reach of our platform by designing and building high-quality integrations with leading DevOps, CI/CD, and agentic and AI-assisted developer platform partners. By reducing friction and embedding Sonar seamlessly into external workflows, you will empower millions of developers to fix issues at the source without leaving their preferred environments. Your work will directly support our ecosystem strategy, transforming integrations into powerful drivers of user adoption and business growth while fostering deep technical relationships with key partners in the industry.

What you will do:
  • Act as the primary technical expert for Sonar's technology partners, translating their capabilities into integration and GTM opportunities for Sonar.

  • Identify integration options between Sonar and its tech partners. Construct reference architectures. Assess feasibility of custom technical integrations with partners if necessary. Present partner integration requirements to Sonar's Product Management and Engineering functions, and influence Sonar's partner integration roadmap as required.

  • Design, architect, prototype, and demonstrate integration-based solutions with Sonar's products and those from Sonar's technical partners, including DevOps and CI/CD providers (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian, Azure DevOps), IDE platforms (e.g., VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Cognition), agentic coding providers (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Google DeepMind), and vibe coding platforms (e.g., Vercel, Replit, Lovable).

  • Evangelize these integrations by producing technical content, including integration guides, blog posts, and demos. Conduct joint webinars with partners and speak at industry and partner events.

  • Assist partners (and customers, as required) with integration deployments and implementations, facilitating interactions between partners and Sonar's Product Management and Engineering functions.

Experience and qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience working in a partner-facing or sales-facing technical role, such as Partner Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, or Developer Advocacy.  .

  • Strong understanding of (and passion for!) agentic software development, including MCP and CLI integration methods and plugin models for leading agentic code providers (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Cognition).

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering with the ability to architect, design and develop software in languages such as Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Go. Proficiency with REST APIs, GraphQL, webhooks, and authentication standards (OAuth, SAML), including experience designing or consuming complex APIs is a strong plus

  • Practitioner proficiency with DevOps and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian, Azure DevOps, Jenkins) and IDE platforms (e.g., VS Code, JetBrains), particularly with respect to their integration and plugin frameworks.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML platforms (e.g., Databricks, AWS Bedrock, AWS SageMaker, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Azure AI Foundry) including experience with marketplace listings, partner directories, and positioning developer tools within cloud-native AI workflows is a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create compelling technical content and explain complex integration architectures to both business and technical stakeholders. Demonstrable track record of thought leadership through published content and speaking engagements.

  • Strong business acumen, and adept at discussing go-to-market strategy with business leaders
