FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.


Your role: FMI is seeking an energetic, organized, and driven Controls Engineer to join their Equipment Optimization Team! The Controls Engineer is responsible for supporting current production systems and design of future systems with target improvements in safety, quality, cost, uptime, and cycle time. In this role you will lead automation and control system integration from design of new systems to supporting existing production infrastructure. You will support all aspects of automation projects, make detailed plans to accomplish goals and direct the integration of technical activities to implement process improvements, equipment installation/modification, standardization and material system development. Successful candidates will achieve results in solving technical problems, designing new equipment, improving existing processes, and supporting customer focused programs. There will be opportunities to get hands-on experience in a wide range of development and engineering disciplines.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, improve, document, and troubleshoot custom built automation systems
  • Develop, implement, and sustain policies and procedures for the technical work performed in a growing production facility
  • Lead integration of new systems and automation equipment
  • Identify, design, implement, test, and document code and control improvements in assigned areas of responsibility using Lean and Six Sigma tools
  • Execute technical assignments with ability to integrate systems adhering to strict schedule and cost considerations
  • Work with internal/external customers to develop and qualify process changes and provide technical services
  • Design and develop new equipment for future production systems
  • Ensure that health and safety policies are integrated early on and followed
  • Apply standards to projects to ensure compliance with certification requirements in plant applications
  • Work with customers to develop and qualify process changes and provide technical services
  • Collaborate with external designers, integrators and manufacturers
  • Support equipment commissioning and qualification

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • 3+ years experience in automotive, food, or aerospace industry OR
  • 5+ years of automation engineering experience in an industrial environment
  • Experience within high-rate automated production, industrial engineering systems, motion control systems, PLC programming
  • Experience with Control Systems, including PLC hardware and programming
  • Experience with industrial controls and electrical (AC and DC power)
  • CAD software familiarity and proficiency
  • Demonstrated results in technical problem solving, product/process development, and supporting customer focused programs/services
  • Familiarity with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) principles
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles
  • Experience with industrial tools and equipment
  • Experience writing basic process procedures or instructions

Preferred:

  • Detailed Allen Bradley controls knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of Networking and Operational Technology Network Security principles and CMMC 2.0 Standards
  • Experience with Ignition or Wonderware/AVEVA InTouch SCADA systems
  • Knowledge of high temperature material processes
  • High temperature / pressure processing experience
  • AutoCAD or Solid Works preferred, including interacting with engineering and process drawings
