Plc Intern information

What is a PLC intern?

PLC Interns are students or recent graduates who work in industrial or manufacturing settings to learn about Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). They assist engineers and technicians in the maintenance, programming, and troubleshooting of automated systems controlled by PLCs. The role typically offers hands-on experience with industrial automation hardware and software, helping interns develop practical skills in control systems. PLC Internships are valuable for those pursuing careers in automation, electrical engineering, or related fields.

What types of projects or tasks can a PLC intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a PLC Intern, you can expect to assist with programming, testing, and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in a manufacturing or automation environment. Typical tasks may include supporting senior engineers in developing control logic, wiring and configuring hardware, and participating in system upgrades or maintenance. You may also help document processes, create technical reports, and collaborate with maintenance or production teams to resolve issues. This hands-on experience provides a valuable foundation for understanding industrial automation systems and can lead to more advanced engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PLC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PLC Intern, you need a foundational understanding of electrical engineering principles, basic programming knowledge, and coursework or training related to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Familiarity with PLC programming software such as Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley RSLogix, or similar platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly are important soft skills. These competencies enable effective troubleshooting, collaboration with engineering teams, and the successful execution of automation projects in industrial environments.

What is the difference between Plc Intern vs Automation Engineer?

AspectPlc InternAutomation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a related degreeBachelor's or higher in engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focusedFull-time, project-driven, technical environment
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automation companies, industrial plantsIndustrial automation, manufacturing, process control

The Plc Intern role is an entry-level position focused on learning and supporting PLC programming and maintenance tasks. In contrast, an Automation Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems. While both roles involve PLCs, the intern position is more about gaining experience, whereas the engineer role involves independent project execution and system optimization.
