Job description

Controls Electrician

McAfee Electric is seeking an experienced Controls Electrician to join our growing team. We are looking for a dependable, skilled electrician with strong experience in industrial electrical systems, motor controls, troubleshooting, and automated equipment.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, reading electrical drawings and schematics, diagnosing control-system issues, and working with equipment such as PLCs, VFDs, motor starters, control panels, sensors, and instrumentation.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, understands how electrical and control systems work together, and takes pride in completing quality work safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain industrial electrical and control systems.

  • Troubleshoot electrical control circuits, motors, motor starters, relays, contactors, sensors, switches, and related equipment.

  • Install, troubleshoot, and replace Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

  • Work with PLC-controlled equipment and assist with diagnosing PLC input/output and control-related issues.

  • Install and wire electrical control panels, cabinets, disconnects, and associated equipment.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and equipment documentation.

  • Perform electrical troubleshooting using meters and other diagnostic equipment.

  • Troubleshoot three-phase electrical systems and motor circuits.

  • Install conduit, wire, cable, control wiring, and electrical components as required.

  • Identify electrical and controls problems and determine appropriate repairs or solutions.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and equipment inspections.

  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, customers, maintenance personnel, and other trades.

  • Accurately document work performed, materials used, and job-related information.

  • Follow NEC requirements, OSHA standards, company safety procedures, and customer-specific safety requirements.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

  • Perform other electrical and controls-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an Industrial Electrician, Controls Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, or similar position.

  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience working with motor controls and three-phase electrical systems.

  • Experience with VFDs, relays, contactors, motor starters, sensors, and control circuits.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Ability to use a multimeter and other electrical testing equipment.

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems logically and work with minimal supervision.

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

  • Ability to safely lift, carry, climb ladders, work from lifts, bend, kneel, and perform the physical requirements of electrical work.

  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following is highly desirable:

  • PLC troubleshooting and diagnostics

  • Allen-Bradley PLCs

  • HMI systems

  • VFD programming and troubleshooting

  • Industrial automation

  • Control panel wiring and fabrication

  • Instrumentation and process controls

  • Conveyor or automated manufacturing equipment

  • Industrial maintenance

  • Electrical service and troubleshooting

  • 480V three-phase systems

  • Electrical prints and ladder logic

PLC programming experience is a plus but is not required for candidates with strong electrical controls and troubleshooting experience.

What We're Looking For

McAfee Electric is looking for someone who is more than an electrician who can simply install conduit and pull wire. We need someone who can troubleshoot a system, determine why equipment is not operating correctly, and help find the solution.

The right candidate will be:

  • Detail-oriented

  • Mechanically and electrically inclined

  • A strong problem solver

  • Comfortable working independently

  • Willing to learn new equipment and systems

  • Professional when working with customers and other contractors

  • Able to communicate problems and solutions clearly

Work Environment

Work may include industrial facilities, commercial facilities, manufacturing environments, construction sites, and existing operating facilities. Candidates should be comfortable working around industrial equipment and in active jobsite environments.

Some projects may require overtime, early start times, or travel depending on customer and project needs.

Compensation

Pay is based on controls experience, electrical experience, qualifications, and demonstrated troubleshooting ability.

Experienced controls electricians are encouraged to apply and discuss compensation based on their level of experience.
